US Deploys Forces to Nigeria to Aid Fight Against Boko Haram, Bandits
The United States military has confirmed the deployment of a limited team of US forces to Nigeria to support counterterrorism efforts against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed banditry across several regions of the country. The deployment, announced by US Africa Command (AFRICOM), underscores growing security cooperation between the US and Nigeria in the face of escalating insurgent attacks.
According to General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, head of AFRICOM, the US team was dispatched following consultations with Nigerian authorities, including meetings with President Bola Tinubu. The personnel are expected to provide intelligence support, reconnaissance capabilities, and advisory assistance to Nigerian security forces, enhancing their ability to tackle insurgent groups.

While the Nigerian military remains the primary force combating terrorism, officials welcomed the assistance, stressing that the US presence is tactical and supportive, not operational command. The deployment follows a series of joint initiatives, including US airstrikes in Nigeria in late 2025 targeting militant strongholds, reflecting a shared commitment to regional security and civilian protection.
The Nigerian government has emphasized that the fight against insecurity is nonsectarian, noting that both Boko Haram and bandit groups attack indiscriminately. Analysts say the limited US deployment signals heightened international concern and may bolster counterterrorism intelligence, early warning systems, and operational coordination in areas plagued by violent extremism.
Authorities have assured the public that ongoing collaboration with international partners aims to reduce civilian casualties, secure communities, and dismantle militant networks, while maintaining Nigerian sovereignty over military operations. The security partnership is expected to continue as Nigeria addresses the persistent threats posed by insurgents and armed bandits.
