US Lobbyist Deal: APC Says Critics of Tinubu Govt Don’t Understand Modern Governance

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly defended the Tinubu government over criticisms trailing its decision to engage a United States lobbying firm, describing opponents of the move as ignorant of modern governance and global diplomacy.

Reacting to widespread public backlash, the ruling party said the engagement of a U.S. lobbyist by the Federal Government of Nigeria is a globally accepted practice used by countries to protect national interests, strengthen diplomatic relations and correct negative international narratives.

In a statement issued by the Lagos APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, the party argued that international lobbying is a legitimate governance tool adopted by advanced democracies to influence foreign policy decisions, promote investment opportunities and enhance a nation’s global image.

The APC stressed that Nigeria, under President Bola Tinubu, is entitled to deploy strategic communication and advocacy mechanisms to counter misinformation, especially on sensitive issues such as security, religious freedom, and human rights, which often shape foreign policy and investment decisions.

The controversy followed reports that the Tinubu administration approved a multi-million-dollar contract with a Washington-based lobbying firm to engage U.S. lawmakers and policy influencers. Critics, including opposition parties and civil society groups, faulted the move, arguing that the funds should have been channelled towards addressing economic hardship, rising inflation, and insecurity at home.

However, the APC dismissed the criticism as politically motivated, noting that the engagement does not replace domestic governance efforts but complements Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives. The party also referenced similar arrangements by past administrations and other African and global governments.

Meanwhile, professional bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) have also backed the federal government, describing the lobbying deal as a standard public relations and diplomatic strategy in today’s interconnected world.

As debates continue, political analysts say the controversy reflects deeper public frustration over governance and economic challenges, even as the Tinubu administration insists its policies are geared towards repositioning Nigeria both locally and internationally.
