WAFCON 2024: Ghana defeat South Africa on penalties to win bronze
Ghana won the bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, defeating South Africa 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Friday.
It was a replay of their group-stage match, which South Africa won 2-0. This time, the Black Queens turned the tables.
South Africa took the lead shortly before halfway through with Nonhlanhla Mthandi, but Ghana equalised in the 68th minute thanks to an own goal by custodian Andile Dlamini.

In the shootout, the Black Queens converted four of five penalties, while Banyana Banyana missed two.
The result echoes Ghana’s bronze medal win over Banyana Banyana in 2016 and represents a significant turnaround under new coach Kim Björkegren after their failure to qualify for the previous tournament.
Despite a solid tournament performance, defending champions South Africa do not place on the podium. Ghana now leads the head-to-head series with five victories to South Africa’s four.
The tournament ends on Saturday, with hosts Morocco facing the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the final.
