Wife Seeks Divorce, Says Husband Left Wedding Night for Political Meeting

A woman, Aderonke, has approached a Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to her husband, Olamiposi, over alleged neglect, battery and lack of affection.

The petitioner told the court that her husband began showing signs of disinterest in their relationship from the very first day of their marriage.

According to Aderonke, Olamiposi abandoned her on their wedding night to attend a political meeting, leaving her devastated on what she described as a special occasion meant for them to consummate their union.

She alleged that her husband returned home the following morning without apologising for his action.

The plaintiff further accused the defendant of repeatedly assaulting her during the course of their marriage, claiming that the abuse became severe to the point that she was hospitalised after one of the incidents.

Aderonke said the alleged physical abuse, neglect and emotional suffering eventually forced her to leave their matrimonial home.

She disclosed that both of them had been living separately for the past six years.

The marriage, according to her, is blessed with two children — a boy and a girl — who are currently in her custody.

While testifying before the court, Aderonke said her husband constantly prioritised politics and other activities over their relationship.

“It dawned on me on the first day of our marriage that my husband placed more value on his political ambition than our relationship,” she told the court.

“I waited endlessly throughout our wedding night for his return after he left for a political meeting.

“He came back the following morning and did not even apologise.

“My husband is cruel and difficult to live with. He always found faults in everything I did and started beating me very early in our marriage.

“The fourth time he beat me, I was rushed to the hospital and admitted for days.”

She added that there was hardly any emotional connection between them throughout the marriage.

According to her, she eventually became fed up with the alleged maltreatment and decided to move out of the house.

Aderonke therefore urged the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of the children.

She also asked the court to compel Olamiposi to take responsibility for the children’s welfare, including feeding, education and healthcare.

The plaintiff specifically requested that the defendant be ordered to pay N100,000 monthly for the upkeep of the children.

Olamiposi was absent during the court sitting despite reportedly being served with hearing notices and court summons.

The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, subsequently adjourned the case till July for further hearing and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on the defendant.

The Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, has in recent months handled several divorce and family-related disputes bordering on domestic violence, neglect and marital incompatibility. (Quick News Africa)
