AWKA – The Anambra State Police Command has arrested and initiated internal disciplinary proceedings against Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi following a viral social media video in which he threatened to kill anyone filming him while on duty.

The command, in a press statement signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Ngozi Ezeabata, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the officer’s identity on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

ASP Isokpehi, who is attached to the Anambra State Command, triggered widespread public outrage on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after a video surfaced on TikTok and spread rapidly to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. In the clip, speaking directly to the camera in Pidgin English, he threatened to “clear everybody down” — including bystanders — if anyone attempted to record him while he carried out official duties. He also vowed that any superior officer who sanctioned the filming of police officers would be responsible for burying the citizens he threatened to kill. The video was later deleted from his TikTok page, but not before it had been viewed and shared thousands of times. Shortly afterward, Isokpehi posted a second video apologizing, describing his earlier remarks as having been made out of frustration.

According to the police statement, the command moved immediately upon sighting the video. “Following a prompt review of the video, the Command immediately identified and arrested the officer involved. The officer is an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Newton Isokpehi, serving in the Command,” the statement read. “In line with the disciplinary standards and ethical code of the Nigeria Police Force, internal disciplinary proceedings have since been activated against the officer.” Commissioner Orutugu strongly condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as incompatible with the values of the force and a threat to public trust and confidence in the institution.

In a significant development, the command disclosed that Isokpehi has been subjected to a drug test as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. “As part of the ongoing investigation, the officer has also been subjected to a drug test to aid the Command in establishing all surrounding circumstances and ensuring a thorough and transparent process,” the statement added.

The arrest comes just two months after a landmark court judgment reaffirming the right of Nigerians to record police officers on duty. On March 17, 2026, the Federal High Court in Warri, in the case of Maxwell Nosakhare Uwaifo v. I.G.P. & Ors., Justice H.A. Nganjiwa ruled that citizens are constitutionally protected when recording police operations in public spaces. The court declared that such actions are covered under Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution and that officers must not interfere, confiscate devices, or retaliate against individuals filming them. The Anambra Police Command’s swift action against ASP Isokpehi appears to align with this judicial position. Police spokesperson Placid had earlier reiterated that recording police officers on duty is a “legitimate tool for public accountability” that should not attract harassment.

The Anambra State Police Command gave a firm assurance that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public. “The Command further assures Ndi Anambra and the general public that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public and that any officer found culpable will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law and police regulations,” the statement read.

The command also used the opportunity to issue a direct reminder to its personnel. “The Command also uses this opportunity to remind officers and men of the Command to remain professional, emotionally balanced, and respectful while carrying out their lawful duties, especially in this era where actions and conduct are constantly subjected to public scrutiny,” it stated.

Commissioner Orutugu praised members of the public and civil society groups for their role in bringing the video to wider attention, describing their intervention as a contribution to police accountability. “The Command appreciates members of the public, civil society groups, and social media users who continue to assist the Police with credible information capable of improving service delivery and accountability,” the statement read. “Residents are encouraged to continue reporting incidents or behaviours capable of undermining public peace, safety, and confidence in security agencies.”

Adeleke Signs New Law to Regulate Motor Parks Across Osun

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has signed the Osun State Park Management Bill, 2026 into law, providing a new legal framework for the administration of motor parks and transport-related activities across the state.

The legislation, signed in Osogbo, is aimed at restructuring the management of motor parks, improving accountability in the transport sector and addressing longstanding disputes over the control and administration of parks.

The new law provides for a more organised system of park management, including measures to regulate operations, improve revenue collection and reduce leakages in the system.

It also introduces provisions for digital ticketing, with the aim of eliminating multiple ticketing and making revenue collection more transparent. The framework is expected to strengthen oversight of commercial transport activities while reducing opportunities for extortion and other irregular practices.

Under the new law, activities such as thuggery, violence and other unlawful conduct within motor parks are prohibited, as the state seeks to create a safer and more orderly environment for transport operators and commuters.

The legislation follows renewed efforts by the Adeleke administration to address disputes and insecurity associated with the control of motor parks in Osun.

The governor had earlier directed the reintroduction of a formal Park Management System following the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, in Ile-Ife. The incident heightened concerns over rival interests and disputes surrounding motor park operations.

Following the development, the state government ordered rival groups to vacate motor parks and directed security agencies to restore order while steps were taken to establish a statutory framework for park administration.

The Osun State House of Assembly subsequently passed the park management legislation, paving the way for the governor’s assent.

With the signing of the bill, the state now has a statutory framework for regulating motor parks, garages, loading points, transport operations and related revenue collection.

The implementation of the law is expected to bring changes to the way parks are administered and how transport operators interact with the state government. Its effectiveness will depend largely on enforcement, transparency and the cooperation of transport stakeholders.

27-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Kills Newborn Hours After Giving Birth in Abuja

A 27-year-old woman, identified as Precious Yohana, has been arrested by the FCT Police Command over the alleged killing of her newborn baby in Abuja.

The woman was reportedly taken into police custody after the newborn died only hours after she gave birth.

The circumstances surrounding the baby’s death remain under investigation, as detectives work to establish what happened between the time of the delivery and the reported death of the child.

READ ALSO:

The case has raised concerns because of the short interval between the childbirth and the death of the newborn. Police investigators are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the baby’s death and determine whether anyone else was involved.

Yohana remains in police custody while the investigation continues. Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigators make progress with the case.

The incident also highlights the importance of immediate maternal and newborn care after childbirth, particularly where a mother or baby may require urgent medical, psychological or social support.

The police have not concluded the investigation, and the allegation against the suspect has yet to be established in court.

Tragedy Strikes FMC: Medical Director Loses Two Daughters—A Doctor and a Pharmacist—Within 48 Hours

NGURU, YOBE STATE — The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Nguru and the entire medical community in Yobe State have been thrown into deep mourning following the heartbreaking loss of two young medical professionals, who were both daughters of the hospital’s Medical Director, Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman.

The deceased, Dr. Hadiya Usman Abdullahi, a medical doctor, and Dr. Aidah Usman Abdullahi, a pharmacist, died within 48 hours of each other in a tragedy linked to sickle cell disease. Both sisters were in their twenties.

According to family sources and colleagues who spoke to NewsTrends, the tragic chain of events began on Friday, October 2, 2026, when Dr. Hadiya passed away after a severe sickle cell crisis. She had been admitted to FMC Nguru for about a week before her death.

Dr. Hadiya, who was undergoing her internship at FMC Nguru, was buried the same day according to Islamic rites at the Emir’s Palace in Nguru.

The family had barely begun to grapple with that loss when tragedy struck again on Sunday, October 4. Dr. Aidah, a pharmacist at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), who was also reportedly pregnant, had been receiving treatment at UMTH. She had reportedly recovered and was discharged in time to attend her sister’s burial.

However, after visiting Hadiya’s grave, Aidah suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The news was made public by Fatima Kagu, a microbiologist, who announced on October 4, 2026, that the FMC Nguru Medical Director had lost two daughters. Kagu offered prayers for the repose of the sisters’ souls and for strength for their mother.

A Community in Shock

The loss of the two young women—one a doctor and the other a pharmacist—has sent shockwaves through the medical community in Yobe State and beyond. Colleagues described the deceased as brilliant, dedicated, and full of promise.

“This is a devastating loss, not just for the family, but for the entire health sector. To lose two young professionals who were already contributing to the system is a huge blow,” a senior colleague at FMC Nguru told NewsTrends, requesting anonymity.

The tragedy has also reignited conversations about sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder that affects millions of Nigerians. Health advocates in the region have renewed calls for mandatory genotype screening before marriage to reduce the prevalence of the disease.

“This is a painful reminder of why we must continue to advocate for genotype testing. Sickle cell is a preventable tragedy if we make informed choices,” said a public health official in Damaturu.

Burial and Condolences

Both sisters have been buried according to Islamic rites. The medical community in Yobe State has expressed profound grief, with many taking to social media to offer condolences to Professor Usman and her family.

NewsTrends extends its deepest condolences to the family of Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman and the entire FMC Nguru community. May the souls of Dr. Hadiya and Dr. Aidah rest in perfect peace.
