Wole Soyinka Slams Donald Trump’s Threat of Military Action in Nigeria as ‘Madness’
Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention in Nigeria over alleged Christian killings, describing the statement as “madness.”
Soyinka made the remarks during an interview with journalists in Makurdi, Benue State, after meeting with Governor Hyacinth Alia on Friday.
Trump had warned that if the Nigerian Government continued to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. would halt all aid and could intervene militarily to eliminate Islamic terrorists responsible for the atrocities. He reportedly stated that U.S. forces might act “guns-a-blazing” to address the situation.

Reacting, Soyinka criticized the lack of careful analysis in Trump’s declaration. “You don’t just open your mouth and say, ‘I’m coming to help you whether you like it or not,’ with poor, almost non-existent understanding of the complexities of the problem,” he said.
He further stressed, “Is that the language of somebody whose head is correct? Because I’m ill or have difficulties does not mean I should accept aid from a mad man. You cannot just open your mouth and say you’re coming to help someone with violence, without any real analysis of where the problem started.”
Soyinka added that while every government has a duty to protect its citizens, foreign powers should show respect for victims and those working to resolve such security challenges in Nigeria.
The Nobel Laureate’s comments reflect rising concerns over foreign interventions and highlight the sensitivity surrounding religious violence and national security issues in Nigeria.
