Woman Arrested in Edo for Allegedly Selling Newborn Baby for ₦1.4m
The Edo State Police Command has arrested a woman, Martina Dachung, for allegedly selling her newborn baby for ₦1.4 million in Uromi, located in the Edo Central Senatorial District of the state.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Eno Ikoedem.
According to the police, Dachung was arrested following a report filed by Ebhomien Matthew Asibor, who alerted security operatives to a suspected child trafficking arrangement.
The statement said that operatives from the Iruekpen Divisional Headquarters acted swiftly on the information and apprehended the suspect.
“On January 8, 2026, one Ebhomien Matthew Asibor of Uromi alerted the Command after learning that a mother was allegedly involved in a trafficking arrangement,” the statement read.

Further investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspects, including a nurse, identified as Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Center, Uromi, and another suspect, Oha Promise, all allegedly linked to the illegal transaction.
Police said the newborn baby boy was safely recovered, while evidence of the alleged payment of ₦1,400,000 was retrieved during the operation.
“The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the police added.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika (fdc), reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating child trafficking, human trafficking, and other criminal activities in the state.
He assured residents that the police would sustain the crackdown on criminal elements to ensure law and order across Edo State.
The police also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in protecting lives and property.
