Olusegun Obasanjo and Ayodele Fayose
‘You Belong in the Zoo’: Fayose attacks Obasanjo in furious message after birthday event
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has reignited his long-running feud with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as someone who “belongs to the zoo” barely 48 hours after the ex-president attended his 65th birthday celebration in Lagos.
Many had assumed the two political rivals had reconciled after Obasanjo’s surprise appearance at the event on Saturday, where he publicly declared that he had forgiven Fayose for past attacks.
But in a dramatic twist, Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, revealed on Monday that Fayose sent the former president a scathing “thank-you” message accusing him of making “irresponsible comments”, suffering from “dementia”, and being “a mad man”.
In the message released to journalists, Fayose wrote:
“Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate except for your very irresponsible comments at your age… Someone once said you are supposed to be kept in the zoo. That’s where you belong… It is also obvious that you have lost your sanity or is this the height of dementia?”
He also challenged Obasanjo to return money he claimed the former president collected from him, saying:
“I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received it but Dangote brought you back.”
Obasanjo responded tersely, saying:
“Thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which revealed who you are — unchanged and unchangeable. Your money has been returned, unopened.”
The exchange has triggered fresh political drama, raising questions about the true nature of the supposed reconciliation.
