Bandits kill Zamfara district head, five others, children, women abducted

A district head in Zamfara State, Alhaji Umaru Bawan Allah, has been shot dead in an attack on Gada community in the Maru Local Government Area by bandits.

Five other persons were reportedly killed in the attack which happened in the early hours of Wednesday.

Residents said dozens of armed men stormed the community around 1am and went house to house, picking identified targets and shooting them dead.

The criminals also abducted unspecified number of people, including women and children, captured when they were trying to escape.

“However, the with the combined efforts of the local vigilantes and the security operatives the abducted residents were rescued.”

“The armed men were intercepted at a spot near Karakkai community. The security operatives mobilised and the local vigilante helped to block their passage.

“After a heavy gunfight, the armed criminals abandoned the abducted victims probably because they were out gunned and out numbered,” a resident identified Aliyu said.

Spokesman for the state police command, SP Muhammad Shehu, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.

At least a dozen killed in knife attack in Kerman province, southern Iran

At least ten people have been killed and several injured in a knife attack in the southern Iranian province of Kerman, authorities in the city of Rafsanjan, where the incident took place, said Monday.

The attack took place on Sunday evening when a person of Afghan origin attacked several people with a knife allegedly for “personal reasons”, according to reports by Mehr News Agency.

The authorities have explained that among the fatalities are six Iranians and four Afghans, while the attacker has been arrested and is in custody after attempting to flee the scene. The wounded have been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Bishop arrested over alleged sexual molestation of members

A team of policemen from Elemoro Division of the Lagos State Police Command, weekend, stormed the Peculiar Generation Assembly at Eputu London in Awoyaya, Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos, arresting the General Overseer, Bishop Chris Omosekpa.

His arrest was sequel to a bench warrant issued against him by Justice R. A. Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual and Domestic Special Offences Court, GRA Ikeja.

It was learned that Omosekpa allegedly molested some of his church members, among whom were minors. He was alleged to have manipulated them through false prophecy and intimidation.

Omosekpa was initially arrested by policemen at Makinde Police Station, Mafoluku, Oshodi and charged to the Ogba Magistrate’s Court where he was granted bail under special circumstances after his lawyer claimed he had COVID-19 and tuberculosis.

Immediately after his bail, Omosekpa was said to have embarked on a public campaign misinforming members of the public that he had been discharged and acquitted.

Chief Operating Officer and Advocate of Children and Vulnerable Persons, ACVPN, Ebenezer Omejalile, told Vanguard that the latest arrest became almost impossible, as the suspect ran to Zone 2, with the intention to get special protection, but he was directed to go back to Makinde Police Station, Mafoluku, Oshodi.

Confirming the arrest, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “The arrest was sequel to a bench warrant issued against him by Justice R. A. Oshodi of the Lagos State of Sexual and Domestic Special Offences Court, GRA Ikeja.”

Kwara teenager disguises as mad man, rapes 10-year-old

The Kwara State Juvenile Court has remanded a 15-year-old boy who allegedly had carnal knowledge of a 10-year-old girl at Oro-Ago, in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

The teenager reportedly emerged from the bush and met the victim with four other girls, who went to swim in a local stream in the area.

He allegedly chased the girls from the stream and caught up with the victim, who fell while running.

The suspect was said to have had carnal knowledge of the girl.

According to the Police First Information Report, the defendant came out of the bush disguising like a mad man.

“The girls were running towards their house for safety before the victim fell where the defendant struggled with her and eventually had forceful intercourse with her,” the report said.

The FIR also said the matter was reported at the Oro-Ago Police Station by the victim’s father, Musa Mohammed, and it was subsequently transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Children Protection Unit for discreet investigation.

The report also revealed that “the medical report obtained from ECWA

Community Health Initiative, Oro-Ago, confirmed that there were bruises, forceful penetration and bleeding from the victim’s private parts.”

The prosecutor, Moshood Adebayo, urged the court to remand the defendant based on the alleged offences.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr O.A. Adeniyi, granted the request of the prosecutor and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Children Reformation Centre, Ilorin.

The matter was adjourned till August 31, 2022.
