Zamfara Govt Sponsors Mass Wedding for 100 Vulnerable Couples

The Zamfara State Government has sponsored a mass wedding for 100 couples drawn from vulnerable groups across the state’s 14 local government areas as part of a social welfare initiative aimed at supporting low-income residents and strengthening family stability.

Governor Dauda Lawal said the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens through targeted social intervention programmes designed to reduce hardship and promote dignity among disadvantaged groups. Representing the governor at the ceremony, Deputy Governor Mani Mummune reaffirmed the government’s dedication to uplifting the less privileged, saying the initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure social inclusion and improved living conditions.

During the event, the state government announced the payment of ₦200,000 dowry for each bride, covering obligations on behalf of the grooms as part of the marriage arrangements. In addition, each bride received ₦50,000 business startup support to help establish small-scale income-generating activities in their new homes, aimed at promoting financial empowerment among newly married couples. The ceremony also featured the distribution of household items to the couples to help them settle into married life and ease the initial cost of setting up homes.

The Emir of Kaura Namoda, Alhaji Sanusi Muhammad Asha, represented the brides and formally gave them out in marriage to their husbands in accordance with Islamic rites, reinforcing the cultural and religious legitimacy of the unions. Governor Lawal, through his deputy, also presented marriage certificates and urged the couples to uphold peace, mutual respect, and understanding in their marriages, advising them to build harmonious homes that attract blessings.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), senior government officials jointly donated ₦5 million to support the newly married couples as part of additional welfare assistance. The Chairman of the State Hisbah Commission, Sheikh Umar Hassan, also praised the government for establishing permanent offices for the commission across all local government areas, saying it would strengthen operations and improve service delivery in enforcing moral and social guidelines.

Mass wedding initiatives like this have become part of social welfare policies in northern Nigeria, often used to support widows, divorcees, and other vulnerable citizens facing economic barriers to marriage. Analysts note that such programmes aim to reduce financial hardship while promoting family and community stability.
