2027 Elections: Muslim Youth Group Seeks Review of INEC Chair Appointment
The National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the Council of State to review the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The appeal was contained in a statement signed by NACOMYO’s National President, Alhaji Sani Suleiman Maigoro, and National Secretary, Alhaji Mas’ud Akintola, and made available to journalists on Saturday.
According to the organisation, the call for a review is driven by concerns over the sensitivity of INEC’s leadership, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

NACOMYO described the leadership of the electoral management body as a critical national responsibility that must command broad public confidence, trust and acceptance across all segments of Nigerian society.
The group warned that any issue capable of generating apprehension or controversy among political stakeholders and the general public should be addressed early to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the democratic process.
“The credibility of elections depends largely on public perception of neutrality, fairness and inclusiveness in the leadership of INEC,” the statement said, stressing that public trust remains central to peaceful and credible elections.
NACOMYO said its appeal was guided by the need to promote national unity, electoral transparency and democratic stability, urging relevant authorities to take proactive steps ahead of the next general polls.
According to the group, a review of the appointment would send a strong signal of the commitment of the Presidency, the National Assembly and other key institutions to transparency, fairness and inclusiveness in the administration of elections.
The organisation further maintained that INEC must be headed by individuals who enjoy broad-based national acceptance, adding that the leadership of the commission should not become a source of avoidable controversy capable of undermining confidence in the electoral process.
NACOMYO concluded by stressing that strengthening public confidence in INEC ahead of the 2027 elections remains vital to the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.
