Nollywood filmmaker jailed five years for drug trafficking

A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced a Nollywood filmmaker, Emeka Mbadiwe, to five years in prison for trafficking 17.30 kilograms of “Canada Loud,” a unique strain of Cannabis Sativa.

The trial judge, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, jailed Mbadiwe after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of unlawful importation of the prohibited drug brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim had earlier informed the judge that the convict was arrested on December 24, 2024, during the examination of incoming cargo with Airway Bill No: 00637337285 from Houston, United States.

Mbadiwe was arrested at the National Handling Company (NAHCO) Import Shed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

Ibrahim also claimed that the convict had enlisted the help of one Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James to import the banned substance.

He stated that Emeka’s actions violated Sections 21(1)(e) and are punishable under Section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

After convicting Mbadiwe, the court allowed the prosecutor to present the case’s facts and tender all exhibits related to the charges, including the bulk of the seized drug, the convict’s confessional statements, and an iPhone Pro Max 12.

The defence lawyer, Dennis Warri, pleaded with the court to consider a lighter sentence, arguing that his client’s timely guilty plea indicated remorse and saved the court time.

Warri also pleaded with the court to impose a non-custodial sentence or a fine instead of a prison term on the convict.

After considering the submissions from both parties, Justice Lewis-Allagoa sentenced Mbadiwe to five years in prison but also allowed him to pay a fine of N3 million as an alternative to the jail term.

The judge further ordered the forfeiture of the drug and the iPhone Pro Max 12 to the federal government of Nigeria.

The charges against Emeka stated: “That you, Mbadiwe Emmanuel Emeka, Male, Adult, on or about the 24th of December, 2024, during the examination of incoming cargo with Airway Bill No:00637337285 from Houston, United States, at the National Handling Company (NAHCO) Import Shed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja-Lagos, procured one Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James to import 17.30 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, LSD, heroin, and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 21(1)(e) and punishable under section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

Rotimi Salami Says He Would Raise a Child Even if DNA Proved Otherwise

Nollywood actor Rotimi Salami has sparked conversation across social media after revealing that he would accept and raise a child even if a DNA test showed the child was not biologically his. The actor shared his perspective during a recent interview with BBC Yoruba, emphasizing that fatherhood is about more than genetics.

Salami explained, “If DNA says a child is not mine, and I already see the child as mine, I will accept the child. The bond between parent and child goes beyond blood.” He added, however, that he was unsure how he would handle the situation with his wife, indicating that the discussion would be deeply personal.

The actor’s statement comes amid broader discussions in Nigeria about paternity scams and the role of DNA testing in determining parental responsibility. Salami highlighted the importance of emotional bonds, care, and stability for a child, asserting that abandoning a child due to biological circumstances would be unfair.

Salami also reflected on the recent death of fellow actor Allwell Ademola, who passed away from cardiac arrest despite managing her asthma condition. He described her death as the “appointed time of her life,” noting that sudden heart events can happen regardless of a person’s health practices.

The actor’s stance has been widely discussed online, with many fans praising his commitment to the emotional well-being of children, and his approach has sparked debate about parenting, responsibility, and morality beyond DNA tests.

Broda Shaggi Reportedly Shot While Filming Skit in Ogun, Hospitalised

Popular Nigerian comedian, skit maker and social media influencer Samuel Animashaun Perry, widely known as Broda Shaggi, has reportedly been hospitalised after sustaining a gunshot injury while filming a comedy skit in the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon beneath the Sango-Ota bridge, where the comedian and his production team had gathered to record a skit.

According to a police source familiar with the situation, the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting incident involving Broda Shaggi remain unclear. However, the source disclosed that the content creator allegedly sustained the injury during the filming session.

“He was shooting a skit under the Sango-Ota bridge when he sustained a gunshot injury. We don’t yet have details about how it happened, but his crew members quickly rushed him to the hospital,” the source said.

Following the incident, the injured comedian was reportedly taken to Blooming Care Hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment shortly after arriving at the facility.

Medical personnel at the hospital reportedly administered first aid treatment before assessing the severity of the injury.

Further findings revealed that he was later transferred to Duchess International Hospital, located in the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Ikeja, where he is currently receiving further treatment and recovering.

Attempts to obtain official comments from both medical facilities were unsuccessful as calls placed to their publicly listed contact numbers did not connect. A text message sent to the hospitals had also not received a response at the time of filing this report.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said the police were alerted by hospital authorities after the injured comedian was brought in.

According to her, detectives and a patrol team were immediately deployed to the hospital following the report.

“The hospital contacted the police to report that a gunshot victim had been brought to their facility. Detectives and a patrol team were immediately mobilised to the hospital, where they discovered that the victim was a skit maker and social media influencer popularly known as Broda Shaggy.

“He was seen on a stretcher with an injury to his thigh. The location of the incident is in Sango-Ota and not within our jurisdiction, but the investigation is ongoing,” she said.

However, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the alleged shooting incident had not yet been officially reported to the command in Ogun State.

“The incident was alleged to have occurred in Ogun State, but it was not reported,” he said.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the comedian’s management were unsuccessful. Calls placed to his manager, Olufemi Oguntamu, also known as Penzaar, were not answered, while a text message sent to him had not received a response as of the time of filing this report.

Broda Shaggi is widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s most influential digital comedians, known for his energetic “area boy” character in viral comedy skits and for appearances in Nollywood productions.

The incident has sparked concern among fans on social media, with many wishing the comedian a speedy recovery while awaiting further clarification on how the shooting occurred.

The development also recalls a similar incident in October 2024 when popular Nigerian content creator Afeez Ojesanmi, popularly known as Salo, was reportedly robbed and shot in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

Security authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting of Broda Shaggi.

Sarah Martins Clarifies Roadside Cooking Incident, Apologises to Lagos Govt

Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has responded to the Lagos State Government’s warning over her recent public cooking activity, explaining that the moment was a charitable and emotional reunion with vulnerable children rather than an attempt to violate environmental laws.

The clarification came after the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, cautioned the actress against cooking on public roads. Wahab warned that such activities violate Lagos environmental and sanitation laws and could lead to arrest and prosecution if repeated.

Reacting in an open letter posted on her Instagram page, Sarah Martins said the viral incident had been misunderstood. According to her, the cooking activity did not take place on the roadway but within a controlled environment close to a palace, under the supervision of security personnel.

“I would like to respectfully clarify that I did not cook on the walkway or on the main street. The meal was prepared in front of the King’s Palace under the supervision of security personnel and far from the main road, ensuring that it did not obstruct movement or create any public nuisance,” she wrote.

The actress explained that the visit was driven by her long-standing relationship with vulnerable street children in the area through her charity initiative, the Sarah Martins Golden Heart Foundation.

According to Martins, the children often ask her to return and cook meals with them whenever she passes through the area, which prompted the recent visit.

READ ALSO:

“The visit was simply born out of an emotional moment. I had deeply missed the bond I share with the vulnerable street children in that area,” she said.

“As I occasionally drive past that axis, the children often plead with me to come back and cook with them like I used to. On this particular day, I decided to spend some time with them and prepare a meal purely to reconnect and create memories with the kids who have always shown me genuine love.”

Despite defending her intentions, Martins apologised to the Lagos State Government for any perceived violation of environmental standards.

“My brief return to that location was never intended to create any form of public nuisance but simply to share a heartfelt moment with children who have continued to ask for my presence,” she said.

“However, if my actions were perceived as inappropriate in any way, I sincerely apologise. I hold the laws and environmental standards of Lagos State in the highest regard.”

She also assured authorities that future cooking activities for the foundation would take place strictly in a designated charity kitchen.

Martins expressed gratitude to Seyi Tinubu, noting that support linked to him had helped her foundation secure a charity kitchen to organise its feeding programmes more effectively.

The actress previously said she received ₦20 million to support her charity work, though Tinubu later clarified that the funds were not a personal donation but contributions raised by friends to help Martins secure a proper space for her humanitarian activities.

The latest controversy comes months after Martins reportedly had a run-in with the Kick Against Indiscipline officials. In October 2025, she was reportedly arrested while cooking on a road median in the Lekki area of Lagos, during which her cooking equipment was seized.

At the time, the Lagos State Government defended the enforcement action, stating that cooking on public infrastructure violated sanitation regulations aimed at maintaining order, public safety and environmental cleanliness across the city.

The recent incident has reignited discussions on social media about balancing charity work, urban sanitation laws, and the responsibilities of public figures when engaging in humanitarian activities in public spaces.

While many Nigerians praised Martins for supporting vulnerable children, others argued that charitable initiatives must still comply with state environmental regulations.

For now, Martins says her foundation will continue supporting underprivileged children while ensuring that all outreach activities are carried out in legally approved spaces.
