Nigeria’s unity was won at great cost, says Buhari
…warns Nigerians against divisive comments
Apparently worried by the spate of violence and looting across the country after the #EndSARS protest, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Nigerians to desist from actions and comments that could jeopardise the unity and progress of the nation.
He spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at the launch of the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) Emblem and Appeal Fund.
The President Buhari, who noted that this year’s occasion was a reminded for Nigerians on the need to guard jealously the unity of the nation which was won at a great cost, stressed that “Nigeria’s strength lies in her diversity”.
He also spoke on security operations in the North-West and North-Central zones in the country and expressed delight at the return of normalcy in some of the areas that previously witnessed serious security challenges.
Buhari said, “Our dear nation has witnessed numerous security challenges since independence. These security threats have undermined Nigeria in the areas of trade, investment and economy, education, health as well as agriculture and frequently denied Nigerians the freedom of movement.
“I am however pleased to state that a lot has been achieved in the internal security operations in the North-West and North-Central zones where in addition to Operations Lafiya Dole, Hadarin Daji, Harbin Kunama, Whirl Stroke, other operations such as Accord, Sahel Sanity and Katsina were successfully launched.
“This has led to the return of normalcy in some of the affected areas. However, all hands must be on deck to check attacks on soft targets.”
The President restated that his administration would continue to forge useful alliances with neighbours and friends in the international community for the total defeat of the security threats affecting the sub-region.
He also promised to ensure timely provision of adequate resources and necessary logistics support for the Armed Forces.
President Buhari further pledged that under his watch the Nigeria Armed Forces would operate with the best modern warfare equipment, with welfare issues receiving utmost attention.
“We are quite aware that it is our responsibility to provide a conducive environment that is devoid of security threats.
“I want to reassure Nigerians that security being one of the pillars of this administration will continue to be at the forefront until peace and security are restored in the country,” he said.
He paid tribute the nation’s fallen heroes and veterans, recounting their sacrifices during the First and Second World wars, the Nigerian civil war and peace support operations around the world.
President Buhari also commended men and women currently engaged in internal security operations, particularly the ongoing fight against insurgency, terrorism and armed banditry in some parts of the country.
He said, “We honour the memory of our gallant officers and men who have paid the supreme sacrifice in order to keep the country united as one entity.
“The nation remains grateful for the efforts and sacrifice of the Armed Forces especially in the fight against insurgency and other internal security challenges confronting Nigeria.
“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day or Veterans Day as it is known in some parts of the world is an important event observed in commemoration of the end of the Second World War.
“In Commonwealth member countries, the Remembrance Day is observed on 11th November yearly. However, for us the date was changed to 15th January annually to accommodate the commemoration of the end of the Nigerian Civil War.”
The President also used the occasion to reassure Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to creating an environment in which all citizens and foreigners are guaranteed freedom and returns on investments.
He, therefore, urged business enterprises to render discounts and rebates to men and women in uniform as a symbol of appreciation for their sacrifices, saying “this kind gesture will make life easier for them and deepen their patriotism.”
On support for families of members of the Armed Forces who died in active service, President Buhari acknowledged that the unfortunate cost of the fight against insurgency and other internal security challenges was the unavoidable loss of lives of some gallant compatriots.
“The reality is that the spouses and defendants of these bread-winners in most cases experience trauma and deprivation. However, we can be of support to them to lighten their burden especially in the light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
”I therefore call on all to spare a thought for them and take positive steps to come to their aid.”
Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (Rtd) called on members of the civil society, religious and political leaders, the academia as well as the media to educate and enlighten Nigerians on the need to recognise and appreciate the sacrifices of gallant compatriots in uniform.

FG to Attach 300 NYSC Corps Members to CNG Workshops for Skills Training
FG to Attach 300 NYSC Corps Members to CNG Workshops for Skills Training
The Federal Government has announced plans to train and attach 300 National Youth Service Corps members to compressed natural gas conversion centres across the country as part of efforts to equip young Nigerians with practical technical skills and promote the adoption of CNG-powered vehicles.
The initiative is expected to provide the selected corps members with specialised training in CNG vehicle conversion and maintenance, enabling them to acquire skills that could improve their employment and entrepreneurship prospects after completing their national service.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives, Monitoring and Delivery, Dr Titilope Gbadamosi, disclosed the plan at the opening of a CNG Retrofitting Training Programme for corps members at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.
Gbadamosi said the selected corps members would undergo training and certification as CNG technicians before being deployed to CNG conversion centres across the country.
She explained that the programme would cover the six geopolitical zones and was designed to contribute to the Federal Government’s broader plan to expand the conversion of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to CNG.
According to her, the initiative is expected to support the government’s target of converting 100,000 vehicles to CNG annually, while simultaneously creating opportunities for young Nigerians to develop specialised technical expertise.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with relevant government agencies and stakeholders in the automotive and energy sectors.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the initiative would provide corps members with practical skills capable of complementing their university and polytechnic qualifications.
Olawande urged the beneficiaries to take the training seriously, describing technical and vocational skills as important tools for reducing youth unemployment and increasing self-reliance.
He said the Federal Government was interested in ensuring that the NYSC programme did not end with the traditional primary assignment and community development activities, but also provided corps members with skills that could sustain them after their service year.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, also described the programme as an important step towards equipping young Nigerians for emerging opportunities in Nigeria’s changing energy and automotive landscape.
He said the collaboration demonstrated the scheme’s commitment to providing corps members with practical skills and preparing them for the labour market.
The National Automotive Design and Development Council is also involved in the initiative, particularly in relation to technical standards and certification for the CNG conversion training.
The Federal Government has in recent years intensified efforts to promote CNG as a cheaper alternative fuel following the removal of petrol subsidy and the resulting increase in transportation costs.
The government has maintained that greater adoption of CNG could help reduce transportation costs, conserve foreign exchange spent on petroleum products and create new jobs in the automotive conversion and maintenance sector.
The training of NYSC members is therefore expected to address both sides of the policy — increasing the pool of skilled personnel available to service the growing CNG industry while providing young Nigerians with employable technical skills.
Meanwhile, reports circulating that each of the 300 corps members will receive a monthly training allowance of ₦100,000 have not been independently confirmed in the official details released on the programme.
The confirmed aspect of the initiative is that the selected corps members will receive specialised training and certification before being attached to CNG conversion centres across the country.
The programme is expected to serve as a pilot for broader youth-focused skills development initiatives as the Federal Government continues to seek ways of linking national service with employment, entrepreneurship and emerging economic opportunities.
