I am clean of doping violation charge, Tobi Amusan, athletics sensation, declares

Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s queen of the tracks and Women’s hurdles world record-holder has dismissed a doping rule violation charge levelled on her by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

“I am a clean athlete, and I am regularly; (maybe more than the usual) tested by the AIU,’’ the 26-year-old athletics sensation posted on her Instagram page on Wednesday after the charge.

“I was tested within days of my third `missed test’. I have faith that this will be resolved in my favour and I will be competing at the 2023 World Championships in August,’’ she stated.

The 2023 World Athletics Championship is scheduled to hold in Budapest from Aug. 19 to Aug. 27.

“Today (Wednesday) the AIU charged me with an alleged rule violation for having three missed tests in 12 months.

“I intend to fight this charge and will have my case decided by a tribunal of three arbitrators before the start of next month’s World Championships,’’ she stated.

Tobi set the current world record of 12.12 seconds for Women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Athletics Championships held at the University of Oregon, United States of America.

On Sunday, she set a new meet record at the Silesia Diamond League competition in Poland. It was her second Diamond League victory this season.

Tobi was part of Nigeria’s 4×100 relay squad that won gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The quartet was stripped of the medal, however, after anchor runner Grace Nwokocha failed a doping test.

Athletics has a three-strike rule that states that if an athlete does not provide accurate whereabouts information for a doping test he or she may incur a declaration of a missed test, or a filing failure.

Three strikes in a 12-month period is an anti-doping violation.

Man City win historic fourth consecutive EPL title

Manchester City on Sunday emerged champions of the 2023/24 English Premier League season after overpowering West Ham 3-1 at the Etihad on the campaign’s final day.

The City claimed the title after finishing just two points over Arsenal, who defeated Everton 2-1 at the Emirate Stadium.

The latest title triumph is Man City’s fourth consecutive title, a record-setting achievement for Pep Guardiola’s side.

It is also the club’s 10th EPL title and the sixth since Guardiola took over the team in 2016.

A Phil Foden brace and Rodri’s shot in second-half ensured Man City ended the season with 91 points over Arsenal’s accumulated total of 89.

The two teams’ performances took the title race to the season’s final day, and the Citizens executed their plans to perfection.

Arsenal had to come from a goal down against Everton, but their effort proved short of the indefatigable champions.

Idrissa Gueye put Everton ahead early in the first half after his freekick was deflected past David Raya by Declan Rice into the net. The Gunners struck back three minutes later when Takehiro Tomiyaso stroked the ball home after Martin Odegaard teed him up.

Kai Havertz completed the come-back for Mikel Arteta’s side with one of the final kicks of the game.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp got a winning farewell in his final game at Anfield, thanks to a Liverpool 2-0 victory over ten-men Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Chelsea confirmed their return to European football next season with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, while Manchester United will hope to win the FA Cup for a chance to play European football next season after finishing eighth in the league despite a 2-0 win at Brighton.

Luton join Burnley and Sheffield United to be relegated from the EPL following a 4-2 loss to Fulham at home.

WAFU U-17: 10-man Golden Eaglets defeat Niger 1-0

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets on Sunday secured their first win at this year’s West Africa Football Union (WAFU) B U-17 tournament with a 1-0 victory over Niger.

The match was played Sunday evening at the University Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

Rapha Adams got the only goal of the game for the Golden Eaglets in the 31st minute to take Nigeria to four points. They are now tied with Burkina Faso who lead the group on goal difference.

The Golden Eaglets started the better of the two sides, and tested the Niger goal a few times in the opening exchanges, with Abdulmuiz Adeleke the main culprit for missed opportunities.

The young Nigerian side displayed impressive attacking prowess, putting the Nigerien defense under constant pressure right from the start.

Breakthrough came for the Golden Eaglets in the 31st minute when a free-kick caused panic in the Nigerien defence.

Rapha Adams was the quickest to react, putting Nigeria ahead with a well-placed shot.

It was the first goal the Golden Eaglets scored at the tournament, following a goalless draw with Burkina Faso in their opening game. This goal ignited the Nigerian team, boosting their confidence.

The Eaglets continued from where they left off in the first half. Despite Rapha Adams and Simon Cletus getting their chances, they could not convert them into goals.

The game took a dramatic turn when Nigeria were reduced to 10 men after Chibuike Okorie was sent off for hauling a Nigerien player down as the last man.

This decision forced the Eaglets to adopt a more defensive approach for the rest of the game.

The resultant free kick was brilliantly saved by Nigeria’s goalkeeper Dominic Chinedu, who displayed excellent reflexes and composure.
