ADC Faces Setback as Activist Refuses Manifesto Committee Position
Prominent activist Yemi Adamolekun has rejected an appointment to the Action Democratic Party (ADC) manifesto committee, expressing surprise at being named to the team despite having no formal affiliation with the party. In a public statement, Adamolekun asked rhetorically, “When did I join your party?,” emphasizing that the invitation was unsolicited.
Adamolekun clarified that participation in political party committees should be voluntary and transparent, stressing that being included without consent undermines personal principles and credibility. She also highlighted that her focus remains on independent advocacy and civil society work, rather than formal party politics.

The ADC had earlier announced a 20-member manifesto committee tasked with crafting policy proposals ahead of upcoming elections. In an effort to bring in expertise, the party reportedly reached out to civil society figures, academics, and activists. However, Adamolekun’s refusal underscores the challenges political parties face when engaging nonpartisan individuals.
Political analysts note that such incidents reveal the delicate balance between political parties and independent activists in Nigeria. While parties seek credible voices to strengthen policy frameworks, activists like Adamolekun maintain neutrality to preserve their independence and advocacy credibility.
The rejection has sparked discussions on social media about the role of activists in political processes, ethical considerations in committee appointments, and the autonomy of civil society actors. Many have praised Yemi Adamolekun for standing firm on principles, while others debate the implications for collaboration between parties and independent experts.
