Afegbua tells Northern politicians to abandon presidential ambitions for 2027
Kassim Afegbua, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former spokesperson for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has urged northern politicians to set aside discussions about the presidency in 2027.
He insisted the South complete its eight-year tenure before power returned to the North.
Speaking on an Arise TV program on Wednesday, Afegbua reiterated that the South’s two-term presidency should be respected.
He also aligned with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who advised northern politicians, including Atiku, to delay any presidential ambitions until 2031.

“For me, I don’t think the North should bother to discuss 2027 for power to be ceded to them,” Afegbua stated.
He criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for disregarding its power rotation principles during the 2023 elections when it fielded Atiku as its presidential candidate. Afegbua referenced Article 7, Section C of the PDP constitution, emphasising rotational leadership.
Afegbua argued that the PDP’s decision to prioritize Atiku disrupted the political balance and contributed to ongoing instability within the party.
“In 2023, I supported a Southern presidency because the PDP abandoned its principle of power rotation. By presenting Atiku as the candidate, they tried to manipulate political dynamics, and since then, the centre has not held,” he remarked.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of upholding the power-sharing agreement. “The South must be allowed to complete its eight years, after which the presidency can return to the North,” he said.
