Arsenal thrash Man City 5-1 to reignite EPL title hope

Arsenal thrash Man City 5-1 to reignite EPL title hope
Arsenal put a stunning performance Sunday evening, blowing away the reigning champions with a 5-1 victory at Emirates Stadium.
This has thus kept race for English premiership trophy alive notwithstanding the unrelenting spirit of the league leader, Liverpool.
The Gunners prevailed to move within six points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
Arsenal were gifted the perfect start within two minutes as Manuel Akanji lost possession and Kai Havertz squared for Martin Odegaard to open the scoring.
Havertz exposed Arsenal’s lack of a clinical goalscorer when he wasted a glorious chance to double the lead.
That could have proved costly when Erling Haaland headed in his 250th career club goal early in the second half to bring City level.
But the defending champions are a pale shadow of their former selves this season and conceded within 105 seconds of the restart when Thomas Partey’s shot deflected in off John Stones.
Myles Lewis-Skelly would have been suspended if his controversial red card in a 1-0 win at Wolves last weekend had not been overturned.
The 18-year-old made the most of that reprieve by curling in Arsenal’s third for his first goal for the club.
Havertz made up for his earlier miss by steering a precise left-foot finish into the far corner past Ortega with 14 minutes left.
It was icing on the cake for Arsenal as 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri picked out superbly by Declan Rice, bent a fabulous shot into the far corner.

Israel Adesanya reacts to knockout loss to Imavov in Saudi

Israel Adesanya reacts to knockout loss to Imavov in Saudi
Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is reassessing his career trajectory after a devastating defeat at UFC Saudi Arabia.
The Nigerian-born fighter suffered his fourth loss in five bouts, falling to Nassourdine Imavov via second-round knockout on Saturday, February 1, in Riyadh.
Imavov capitalized on an opening, landing a decisive shot that left Adesanya vulnerable before finishing the fight with ground-and-pound. Though Adesanya showed frustration with the referee’s stoppage, officials had little choice, as allowing the bout to continue could have led to a more severe outcome, according to GIVEMESPORT.
Following the loss, which brought his professional record to 24 wins (16 KOs) and five defeats, Adesanya addressed his future in an interview on the UFC post-fight show. While he did not commit to any immediate decisions, including retirement, he acknowledged that he would take time to reflect.
“I have to chill and then think about things,” Adesanya said. “I will relax first for a little bit, just help the teammates who have fights coming up, and yeah, see what I want to. I was going to do that anyway, but you know, now I’m forced to. Shoutout to Nassourdine for that.”
Adesanya, once a dominant force in the middleweight division, ascended quickly to championship status and pursued a second title in another weight class. However, after a meteoric rise, he now finds himself on a downward trend in the rankings. The path back to a title shot remains uncertain.
Expressing disappointment in the outcome, Adesanya noted that he had controlled the first round—according to GIVEMESPORT’s unofficial scorecard—before being stopped early in the second.
Reflecting on the fight, he said: “My team’s still proud of me for the work that I put into this. It’s just the thrill and agony. To be able to feel something so great but also able to feel something so deep and so [frustrating]. It’s a f****** lovely game, but it’s a stupid game at the same time.”
Acknowledging Imavov’s momentous victory, he added: “He must be excited to beat a guy like me. But again, I felt good. Round one, I was in control of everything. In hindsight, maybe I should have taken some time. I just didn’t want him to rest because I knew he was tired.”
Adesanya now faces a critical period in his career, with fans and analysts eager to see what his next move will be.

Court grants Sowore N10m bail for calling Egbetokun illegal IGP

Court grants Sowore N10m bail for calling Egbetokun illegal IGP
Activist and ex-presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been granted bail in the sum of ₦10 million with one surety in like sum.
The court in granting bail on Thursday said the surety must be a responsible individual with landed property valued in the same amount.
The trial judge, Justice Musa Liman, ruling on the bail application ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the registrar of the court.
The judge, however, gave him 24 hours to perfect the bail conditions or be remanded by the police until the bail is perfected.
The convener of #RevolutionNow movement on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to cybercrime charges the police instituted against him in Abuja.
The police charged Sowore on Tuesday with 17 counts of cybercrime offences for referring to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, as “illegal IGP” in a post on his social media platforms.
IGP Egbetokun, who was expected to have exited service having attained the statutory retirement age of 60 years in September 2024, secured an extended stay in office.
This followed a controversial alteration to the Nigeria Police Act passed by the National Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu.
