Army again warns against use of military camouflage

The Nigerian Army has reiterated that the ban on the unauthorised use of military camouflage remains in full effect.

Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, said this in a statement yesterday. He was reacting to a video of a soldier molesting a civilian for wearing Army Desert Camouflage uniform.

Gen. Nwachukwu said the video was the old was being circulated by individuals with malicious intent to create tension between the military and the civilian populace. According to him, only personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Nigeria Police Force are legally permitted to wear military camouflage.

Gen. Nwachukwu said the regulation became expedient as terrorists, insurgents, and other imposters had exploited the misuse of military camouflage to commit crimes, thereby posing significant security threat.

The statement reads: “The Army remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. We urge the public to disregard the re-circulated video and remain vigilant against attempts to sow discord and tension within the country.

“The unfortunate incident in question happened in 2021, and the Army took immediate and decisive action at that time. The soldier involved was arrested, tried, and appropriately punished for his unacceptable behaviour, which violated the core values of the army, particularly respect for others and their fundamental rights.”

Gunmen dressed in military uniforms have reportedly invaded Akamama Community in Opuama Kingdom, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that the attack is coming barely 10 days after a previous attack on the community.

It was gathered that the gunmen came in gunboats, and accompanied by workers of an unnamed pipeline surveillance company. They also allegedly destroyed property worth millions of Naira in the coastal community. Their presence forced many to scamper to safety.

A community member, Elder Amaowei Sunday, while narrating his ordeals, appealed for government’s urgent intervention.

He said: “The gunmen were pursuing people. I was captured yesterday and they beat me and destroyed my belongings.”

Elder Sunday also called on the Federal and state government to intervene by cautioning the said surveillance contractor to avoid further chaos in the community.

Another community member, Ms Catherine Allen, said the invasion was becoming too many, while Mr. Osain Geoffrey said instead of invading the community, the community leaders should have been invited.

Nigerian Army Suspends Retirements for Officers Amid Nationwide Security Emergency

The Nigerian Army has temporarily frozen both statutory and voluntary retirements for certain officers, including Generals, following the nationwide security emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. The decision aims to bolster manpower as the country faces a surge in kidnappings and worsening insecurity.

The move comes after more than 600 abduction cases were reported in November 2025, including the kidnapping of over 300 students in Niger State, 38 worshippers in Kwara State, and 25 students in Kebbi State.

An internal circular dated December 3 and signed by Maj. Gen. E. I. Okoro on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff cited provisions in the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service Officers (HTACOS) 2024, allowing service extensions “in the interest of the service.” The memo explains that officers usually retire upon reaching age limits, completing 35 years of service, or failing promotion/conversion boards, but these rules can be overridden during national emergencies.

READ ALSO:

The suspension affects officers who have:

  • Failed promotion examinations three times
  • Been passed over repeatedly at promotion boards
  • Reached rank age limits
  • Failed conversion boards thrice
  • Completed 35 years of service

Officers granted extensions will remain in service but will not be eligible for further promotions, courses, secondments, or extra-regimental appointments. Those unwilling to continue can still proceed with standard exit procedures.

Commanders have been instructed to communicate the directive and manage morale across units, with the policy to be reviewed once national security conditions improve.
