ASUU Praises President Tinubu for Ending Years of University Strikes
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive role in resolving long-standing disputes in Nigeria’s university system, bringing an end to years of disruptive strikes that affected academic calendars nationwide.
The union’s praise follows the signing of a landmark agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, which modernizes the 2009 collective bargaining framework, includes a 40% salary review for lecturers, and introduces reforms for research funding and academic allowances. The deal signals a new era of stability in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, ensuring that students can complete their studies without recurring interruptions.

ASUU President Professor Chris Piwuna described the deal as a historic achievement, emphasizing that it restores confidence in the federal universities and enhances the welfare of academic staff. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa credited President Tinubu’s direct involvement for breaking a deadlock that had persisted for over 16 years, calling the administration’s approach “dialogue over discord, reform over delay.”
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also welcomed the agreement, hailing it as a milestone for protecting academic calendars and improving the quality of higher education in Nigeria. Analysts note that the resolution of these disputes could help curb brain drain by creating better conditions for lecturers and researchers across the country.
The new pact marks a turning point in Nigeria’s university negotiations, ending the era of prolonged strikes and grandstanding and ushering in a period of constructive engagement between the federal government and academic staff.
