Atiku Abubakar Reacts to Son Abba’s APC Defection, Support for Tinubu’s Re-Election
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has broken his silence following the defection of his son, Abba Abubakar, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his public endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid for 2027.
Abba’s move, officially announced at the National Assembly in Abuja, saw him welcomed into the ruling APC by senior party figures, including Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, along with other leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone. He pledged to mobilise his political network in support of Tinubu’s second-term agenda, highlighting the APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda as the key driver behind his decision.

In his reaction, Atiku described his son’s defection as a personal choice and stressed that it does not reflect his own political stance. He emphasised the democratic freedom of individuals to make independent political decisions and reiterated his commitment to advancing an alternative governance agenda through the PDP.
The defection has triggered significant reactions across Nigeria’s political spectrum. Analysts suggest that Abba’s move could strengthen APC’s political base, particularly in the North-East, while also influencing voter perceptions and shaping alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. APC leaders welcomed the development, describing it as a boost to the party’s inclusive strategy and reaffirming support for Abba and his followers.
The event underscores ongoing trends in Nigerian politics, where cross-carpeting and realignment of influential figures continue to shape the dynamics of upcoming elections.
