Updated: Atiku, Obi, El-rufai, others form coalition to unseat Tinubu
Updated: Tinubu reacts as Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai, others form coalition
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he has formed a coalition with some prominent opposition leaders aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Atiku made the declaration during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, attended by several opposition politicians, including former key members of the All Progressives Congress who have since defected.
But the Tinubu-led administration has reacted saying the coalition was driven by hate and not genuine.
The event was convened to address President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Among those present at the event were the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who was represented by Dr Yunusa Tanko; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal; and former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
Others are a former governorship aspirant in Ogun State, Segun Sowunmi; former Director General of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Dr Salihu Lukman; Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, Chief Peter Ameh and Soni Monidafe, among others.
When asked whether the emerging coalition would serve as the main opposition against the APC in the 2027 elections, Atiku said, “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.”
Many are wondering how leaders with differing ideologies, ambitions, and party affiliations can work together.
In his reaction, spokesperson for the Tinubu-led government, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement referred to the Abubakar-led coalition as “the coalition of Tinubu haters.”
“They are not politicians after the public good. It’s all about their self-interest. They are disgruntled. They are a frustrated lot. The leaders are sore losers. The coalition is an amalgam of Tinubu haters. Their agenda is to stop Tinubu,” Onanuga said.
The presidential spokesperson added that Tinubu remained focused on governance and would not be distracted by a coalition of politicians driven by selfish interests.

BREAKING: Court Sacks Uzodinma as APC Candidate, Declares Okorocha Winner of Imo West Primary
BREAKING: Court Sacks Uzodinma as APC Candidate, Declares Okorocha Winner of Imo West Primary
A Federal High Court in Abuja has removed Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections and ordered the recognition of former governor Rochas Okorocha as the party’s candidate.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu delivered the judgment on Thursday, October 29, 2026, ruling that evidence before the court established that Okorocha won the APC senatorial primary conducted on May 18, 2026.
The judge ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise and publish Okorocha’s name as the APC candidate. He also directed the party to forward Okorocha’s name to the electoral commission and restrained Uzodinma from continuing to present himself as the party’s candidate for the senatorial contest scheduled for January 16, 2027.

The judgment followed a legal challenge filed by Okorocha against the recognition of Uzodinma as the winner of the party’s primary. The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1854/2026, questioned INEC’s decision to recognise the incumbent governor as the party’s nominee.
The dispute has been marked by conflicting accounts of the primary election. INEC’s previously reported official result credited Uzodinma with 230,464 votes and Okorocha with 1,098 votes. However, Okorocha challenged that outcome in court, insisting that he won the primary.
The ruling represents a major development in the contest for the Imo West Senate seat, although the political and legal implications may depend on any further court proceedings.
Following the judgment, the Imo State chapter of the APC maintained that Uzodinma remained its candidate, saying its legal department would study the court’s decision and determine the party’s next steps.
The development leaves the party facing a dispute over who should represent it in the senatorial election, with the court’s directives placing Okorocha in line for the ticket.
The court’s ruling and the APC’s response have both been reported by Nigerian media outlets.

2027: Akpabio Says Tinubu’s Online Critics Are Paid, Mobilises Northern Youths
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that people criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his supporters on social media are being paid, urging northern youths to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.
Akpabio made the remarks on Wednesday when members of the Arewa Revival Project, a youth organisation drawn from Nigeria’s 19 northern states, visited him at his office and presented him with an award in recognition of his contributions to nation-building.
The delegation was led by the group’s coordinator, Mustafa Ibrahim.
While thanking the organisation for the recognition, Akpabio urged its members to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election and engage young Nigerians at the grassroots to explain what he described as the benefits of continuity in government.
He warned that the group could face difficulties countering online criticism because, according to him, some of those attacking the President and his supporters were financially motivated.
“It is not going to be easy for you because most of those who are attacking the President and attacking these young men on social media are being paid. You are not being paid,” the Senate President said.
Akpabio advised the youths to organise regular meetings and engage Nigerians directly, rather than relying solely on social media to promote the administration’s policies.

“You may not be able to have the kind of energy and time with them. But once in a while, gather the youth together and let them see the truth and know the truth,” he said.
The Senate President, however, did not provide evidence to substantiate his allegation that people criticising Tinubu online were receiving payments.
Akpabio also defended the President’s economic policies, particularly the tax reforms, arguing that the administration was taking steps to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on crude oil and diversify the economy.
He urged young Nigerians to look beyond criticism on social media and assess the government’s policies and initiatives.
The former Akwa Ibom State governor also praised Tinubu’s performance, saying members of the National Assembly had endorsed the President for a second term.
“No President has achieved the level of development that he has done in this country today since independence,” Akpabio said.
His remarks come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, in which Tinubu is expected to seek re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Opposition parties and other critics have continued to question the administration’s economic policies, particularly their effects on the cost of living and household purchasing power.
Akpabio also expressed optimism that Nigeria could soon establish a state police system, claiming that about 30 state Houses of Assembly had endorsed the proposed constitutional amendment.
He said decentralised policing could strengthen the country’s security architecture and improve responses to local security threats.
Earlier, Ibrahim said the group considered Akpabio deserving of the award because of his contributions to national development and the work of the National Assembly under his leadership.

2027 Elections: Pantami, Adebutu, Gwarzo Await INEC Decision Today
2027 Elections: Pantami, Adebutu, Gwarzo Await INEC Decision Today
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to decide on Thursday, October 29, the fate of several governorship candidates omitted from its final list for the February 6, 2027 elections, including former Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami, former Ogun State governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu and Aminu Gwarzo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
INEC National Commissioner, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, confirmed that the commission would consider the final list of candidates at its meeting on Thursday, raising expectations that the disputed omissions could be resolved.
The affected candidates were excluded from the final list published on October 10, prompting protests, petitions and legal moves by their political parties.
Pantami is seeking the Gombe State governorship on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Adebutu is the party’s candidate in Ogun State. Gwarzo is contesting in Kano State under the NDC, with his running mate, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso. The NDC’s Kaduna State governorship candidate, Senator Danjuma Laah, is also among those affected.
Other candidates reportedly omitted include Sebastine Hon of the Social Democratic Party in Benue State, Abdullahi Yakubu of the SDP in Bauchi, Musa Zubairu of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ahmed Shuaibu of the Action Alliance and Mohammed Aminu of Accord, all in Bauchi State.
INEC’s decision is expected to follow complaints from the affected parties, which insist that they fulfilled the legal requirements for nominating their candidates.
The dispute centres on Sections 77(5), 77(6) and 77(7) of the Electoral Act 2026, which require political parties to submit their membership registers to INEC within the prescribed period before conducting valid primaries, congresses and conventions.

The commission said it excluded the candidates because their political parties failed to comply with the membership-register requirements. It based its position on a September 24, 2026, Supreme Court judgment that upheld the constitutionality of the relevant provisions of the law.
INEC also cited the court’s decision in the case involving the Zenith Labour Party, which affirmed the commission’s timetable requiring political parties to submit their membership registers between April 21 and May 10, 2026.
The commission maintained that parties that failed to meet the statutory requirements were ineligible to sponsor candidates in the affected elections.
However, the PDP and the NDC have challenged the exclusions, arguing that they complied with the relevant provisions and that their candidates were wrongly omitted.
The PDP has engaged INEC over the exclusion of Pantami and Adebutu. The party also filed an affidavit at the Federal High Court registry in Abuja on October 15 challenging the omissions.
In Ogun State, PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella described Adebutu’s exclusion as an error, insisting that the party had fulfilled the necessary requirements and expressing confidence that INEC would restore his name.
Pantami’s name had appeared on INEC’s provisional list published on August 29 before it was missing from the final list issued on October 10. He emerged as the PDP’s Gombe governorship candidate after a court-ordered rerun of the party’s primary on September 29.
The former minister’s camp has indicated that it would pursue legal options if the commission fails to resolve the dispute.
Similarly, the NDC has protested the omission of Gwarzo and his running mate. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said it had written to INEC and received acknowledgements but had yet to receive a substantive response.
Gwarzo has also approached the court, seeking an order compelling INEC to recognise him and his running mate as the party’s candidates for the Kano governorship election.
The deadline for political parties to notify INEC of candidates they believed had been wrongly omitted expired on October 24, in accordance with Section 32(2) of the Electoral Act 2026.
Thursday’s meeting is therefore expected to clarify the commission’s position on the petitions and whether any changes will be made to the final list.
However, INEC has not announced that any of the affected candidates will be reinstated. Their eligibility remains subject to the commission’s decision and any further judicial determination.
The outcome could have significant implications for the affected parties as preparations continue for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections.
