Bandit leader who forced community to give him chieftaincy title, 2 other kingpins killed in Zamfara

Three bandit kingpins terrorizing Zamfara State, along with some of their fighters, have been killed by a joint security taskforce operating in the state.

According to security expert and counter insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the bandit kingpins included Kachalla Mati, Jammo Baki, and a former police officer, Kachalla Yada.

In a post on X handle Saturday morning, Zagazola Makama said: “Update: Security Intelligence, in joint efforts with the Militia Joint Task Force, have neutralized 3 bandit kingpins in the North West on April 26, 2024.

The kingpins included Kachillaha Mati, Jammo Baki, and one other ex-police personnel, Kachallah Yada, as well as several other fighters in Tidibale in Gangara villages of ISA and Sabon Birnin LG Zamfara State.

Jammo was very dangerous and ruthless, to the extent that he forced the community to give him a chieftaincy title.

On the other hand, Kachallah Yadda, who was an ex-police officer, is in charge of training the bandit on weapons handling as well as illicit arms trafficking.

The ‘suyanization” of the three terrorists was a huge blow to the bandits in Zamfara State and a relief to the people of the North West.

This also got to show that the initiative of the Zamfara state government in collaboration with the security forces since it vowed to never negotiate with bandits but to crush them by any means is yielding positive results.

The recruitment of the Civilian Joint Task Force, popularly known as Askarawa, to go after the bandits in their enclaves and their hideouts was a major game changer.

Just like in the case of the North East, the worst nightmare of the bandits are the “Askarawa,” or Yansakai, as they are popularly called. This was because they have knowledge of the terrain and know the bandits who have in the past operated openly with impunity.

Within the past few months, the Askarawas have captured and killed hundreds of bandits, their informants, and collaborators. They have also recovered thousands of livestock rustled by the bandits, as well as rescued dozens of abducted victims.

This was why the pressure mounted on the bandits in both military, air, and ground offensives is forcing them to beg for “negotiations” through several videos on social media.”

Attempts by PlatinumPost reporters to confirm the killings of the terrorists by relevant security bodies have not yielded the desired results as of the time of filing this report.

Father of 12 found dead in Bayelsa brothel after sexual escapade

In Bayelsa State, a middle-aged man has died in a brothel after allegedly lodging with a commercial worker.

The lifeless body of the yet-to-identified man was found on Tuesday in a room at the brothel located in the State Capital, Yenagoa.

According to reports, the deceased, who is said to be a father of 12 children visited the brothel to meet his regular customer at Tombia-Amassoma Road axis of Yenagoa.

The deceased, aged 40, from Delta State, was said to be battling stroke before the unfortunate incident, residents of the area disclosed.

He was said to have left home around 8 am on Tuesday to meet a prostitute as he was of the customers to the commercial sex workers at the brothel, but he was later found dead in the quarters.

All the commercial sex workers fled on noticing that the man had died.

As at the time of visiting the scene, people living around the area were trying to get the identity of the deceased in order to contact the relative to evacuate the corpse for burial.

It was gathered that security operatives have previously raided the brothel and earmarked it as a red-light zone.

The commander of Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, in Bayelsa State, Mr Tolumobofa Akpoebibo Jonathan, confirmed the incident.

According to him, the deceased is a 40-year-old father of 12 from Delta State.

Man bags life imprisonment for raping 8-year-old girl in C’River

One Aniedi Mfon has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping an 8-year-old girl in Cross River State.

25-year-old Mfon was convicted and sentenced by the Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar on Tuesday, 7th May 2024.

Justice Blessing Egwu, who delivered the judgement, bemoaned the prevalence of child defilement in the society.

Justice Egwu said the convict has no conscience and she awarded a fine of N1 million be paid to the survivor, who was not named.

Sources confirmed that Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Reacting, Barr. James Ibor said the father of the survivor was intimidated and offered bribes to withdraw the case but he resisted.

“I thank the Commissioner of Police and his team, Attorney General Ededem Ani and his team, the staff of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, the survivor and her father who resisted intimidation and bribes to back out.”

33 states face flooding risk, NEMA warns

Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has alerted to the danger of flooding sweeping through 33 out of 36 states of the federation between July and September this year.

He stressed the need for proactive measures against the predicted 2024 flood disaster.

Addressing stakeholders at the National Emergency Coordination Forum (ECF) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Umar highlighted the importance of early warning backed by early action to mitigate the impact of the impending disasters.

NEMA’s mandate includes coordinating emergency preparedness, mitigation, and response activities across Nigeria.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had predicted flood high-risk areas in several states and local government areas (LGAs) from April to November.

“As you may be aware, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) have both released the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) respectively for 2024.

“The prediction informed that in the April, May and June period, 25 states and 72 local government areas (LGAs) are within flood high-risk areas, indicating heightened vulnerability to flooding.

“This vulnerability is said to persist into subsequent months of July to September with 33 states and 135 LGAs identified as high-risk areas, while the period between October and November has 19 states and 44 LGAs,” she said.

Following the predictions, NEMA convened an Experts’ Technical Meeting to analyse the disaster management implications and develop a 2024 climate-related disaster preparedness and mitigation strategy.

“Based on the predictions, various recommendations have been made as preparedness and mitigation actions to be taken by relevant stakeholders to reduce possible impacts.

“This also serves as early warning message to the general public,” she said.

Recommendations include community sensitisation, clearing of waterways, monitoring of dam discharge, and relocation of flood-prone communities.

Umar urged stakeholders to take the recommendations seriously to prevent loss of lives and property. She thanked stakeholders already taking steps to address emergencies and encouraged others to follow suit.

The DG emphasised the need for regular coordination meetings among emergency sectors to effectively respond to adverse climate-related situations. She then called on all participants to disseminate the messages to grassroots levels for appropriate action.

Umar reiterated NEMA’s commitment to reducing the impact of predicted flooding and providing necessary support to affected persons.
