BREAKING: Court stops Rivers Assembly from proceeding with impeachment against Fubara
A Rivers State High Court has issued an interim injunction restraining the Rivers State House of Assembly from continuing with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The court order bars the Assembly, its Speaker, and the Chief Judge of Rivers State from receiving, processing, or acting on any impeachment notices or from constituting an investigative panel pending the determination of a substantive suit filed by the governor and his deputy.

The ruling follows recent moves by the Assembly to issue notices of gross misconduct, citing alleged budgetary violations, failure to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill, and actions said to undermine legislative authority. The impeachment move had triggered intense political tension across the state.
The legal intervention has temporarily eased the standoff between the executive and legislative arms of government, even as lawmakers insist they are exercising their constitutional powers. Some Assembly members have accused the governor’s camp of using court actions to frustrate legislative duties, claims the governor’s supporters deny.
The case has been adjourned for further hearing, with political stakeholders closely watching the outcome, which could determine the future direction of governance and stability in Rivers State.
