Burkina Faso Releases 11 Nigerian Military Personnel After Emergency Plane Landing

Burkina Faso authorities have released 11 Nigerian military personnel detained following the emergency landing of a Nigerian C-130 cargo plane in Bobo-Dioulasso, the country’s second-largest city.

The Association of Sahel States (AES) described the unplanned landing as an “unauthorised” entry into Burkina Faso’s airspace, calling it an “unfriendly act.” The detainees, including two crew members and nine passengers, have since been allowed to return to Nigeria, though the status of the seized aircraft remains unclear.

The Nigerian Air Force stated the plane made an unplanned stop due to a technical concern while en route to Portugal for a ferry mission, asserting that the landing followed standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. Spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame said an investigation is ongoing, adding that the military personnel were treated well and that plans to continue the mission were underway.

The incident coincided with heightened regional tensions, following Nigerian airstrikes in Benin targeting military personnel allegedly involved in a foiled coup, intensifying scrutiny of cross-border military activities.

A government spokesperson in Abuja confirmed that Nigeria acted under ECOWAS protocols at the request of Beninese authorities after soldiers briefly seized the national broadcaster and attempted to remove President Patrice Talon.

Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, emphasised the region’s fragile democratic institutions and security challenges, calling for urgent investment in the security of West African member states.

Police to Resume Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement January 2, 2026, Citing Rising Security Threats

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing growing security concerns linked to the misuse of vehicles with unauthorised tinted windows.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that there is no court order restraining the police from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles, despite the matter still pending before a court.

According to the statement, enforcement was earlier suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the tinted glass permit registration process without undue pressure.

“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” Hundeyin said, adding that criminals have exploited such vehicles to conceal their identities while carrying out crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.

The police said the decision to resume enforcement was informed by recent security assessments, which showed that vehicles with illegal tinted glass have become a major tool for organised criminal groups.

“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” the statement said.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and in strict compliance with extant laws.

He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, the rule of law, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to enhance national security.

Motorists who require tinted glass were advised to apply for the official tinted glass permit through approved channels and ensure their vehicles fully comply with legal requirements ahead of the enforcement date.
