Comedian AY confirms separation from wife after 20 years

Ayo Makun, a well-known Nigerian comedian, and his wife, Mabel, have split up after 20 years of “friendship/marriage”.

On Sunday, the comedian revealed the development via Instagram.

He stated that he was no longer capable of entertaining the public with “deep personal family issues.”

He wrote, “Many people believe that staying silent simply means that one is incapable of dealing with issues. Projecting a negative narrative against someone who is not struggling to defend himself doesn’t mean he is weak. Some of us are just logical enough to understand the difference between opinions, values, beliefs, and facts.

“The personality and ability that I possess simply confirm that I have reached that stage in my life where I can not be entertaining the public with deep personal family issues. They just might be too much to handle concerning the individuals involved. Not even when I have a grown-up daughter who has access to social media. Her mental health needs to be protected from seeing things she can not be proud of online.

“Yes! Without compromising my family, I have found myself doing some things that I am not proud of today. It is one thing to watch my friendship/marriage of 20 years slip off my hands, but it’s another thing for the parties involved to understand how to appropriate the blame in a space that is designed for most women to always play the victims and win. I can tell you for free that no one is completely innocent enough to cast stones.

“Presently, I am loving the way that lies about me in all these blogs are travelling faster than the truth. But my painful truth will eventually beat away all the lies.”

Also, in a post on her Instagram page on Sunday, Mabel said she had stopped reacting to disrespect.

She wrote, “Distance is my new response to disrespect. I don’t react, I don’t argue. I don’t dive into the drama. I just remove myself.”

Ayo and Mabel got married in November 2008, and they are blessed with two children.

FG bans money rituals, smoking in Nollywood movies, skits

The Federal Government has prohibited of money rituals, smoking and the glamorization of other vices in Nigerian films and skits.

Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, announced this on Wednesday.

Husseini made this disclosure at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood, held in Enugu.

The event was organised by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

The event brought together movie producers, directors, and actors from across the country, as well as leaders of various guilds and associations in the Nigerian film industry.

The new regulations aim to promote a more responsible and ethical film industry in Nigeria as well as prevent the promotion of harmful and illegal activities through film.

Husseini said that Nigeria was facing an industry emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians and stakeholders.

“When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on the need to make subsidiary legislation to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies, he saw the need to include money rituals.

“Others included in the regulation are ritual killings and glamorising other crimes in order to further sanitise the film industry.

“Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004 has approved the regulation.

“The minister has approved the ‘Prohibition of money ritual, ritual killing, tobacco, tobacco products, nicotine product promotion and glamorisation display in movies, musical videos and skits regulations 2024’.

“We have also forwarded the approved copy to the Federal Ministry of Justice for gazette,” he said.

Husseini said the sensitisation programme was to educate stakeholders on the danger inherent in smoking in Nigerian movies.

According to him, besides the health implications, glamorising smoking in films poses a negative influence on teens and young adults who constitute the largest segment of Nigerian movie viewers.

He said that the board was set to undertake detailed enlightenment programmes in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups and other institutions.

“As you all know, the film industry occupies a central position in the entertainment and creative sector, and it is imperative that we continue to place the highest premium on the progress of the film industry.

“The NFVCB supports smoke-free movies and smoke-free Nollywood. And we therefore seek your collaboration to develop creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages.

“After a series of engagements, the NFVCB in collaboration with the CAPPA decided to do a ‘subsidiary regulation’ to cater for smoking in movies since this aspect was not expressly spelt out in the extant law.

“The NFVCB is well prepared to take leadership in this regard and has planned and begun implementing innovative ways to achieve its mandate,” he said.

NAN reports that it is the duty of the Board to register all film and video outlets across the country and keep a register of such outlets among other functions.
