The Federal High Court in Lagos has granted bail to an actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who was arraigned before the court on Monday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly spraying new naira notes at a party.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke who admitted the actress to bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety in like sum also ruled that the surety must be a public servant in the service of the Federation or the Lagos State Government not below the rank of Grade Level 12, or a holder of a genuine statutory certificate of occupancy of a developed landed property within the Lagos State Municipality.

The court also held that the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the original statutory certificate of occupancy of the landed property is to be deposited with the Registrar of the court and in the case of the public servant, an official letter from his or her head of department stating the status and salary level of the surety.

The surety is to also produce to the court, two copies of his recent passport photograph and evidence of payment of tax.

The judge also ordered that the actress be further remanded in the Kirikiri correctional facility pending the perfection of the bail terms, before adjourning the matter till April 3, for trial.

On February 13, the EFCC had arraigned the actress before the court on a two-count charge of tampering with the sum of N100,000 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and dancing on the same at the said occasion.

According to the prosecutor, Sulaiman Sulaiman, the offence was contrary to and punishable under section 21 (1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.

The actress had denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Following her not-guilty plea, counsel to the actress, Adenike Goncalves, asked the court to grant her client bail pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Adenike Goncalves also urged the court to remand her client in the EFCC’s custody, pending the perfection of the bail terms, if so granted by the court.

The prosecutor in his response had submitted that bail is at the discretion of the court. He also insisted that in the event bail is granted, the conditions of the bail term should be such that would enable the defendant to be present during the trial.

After hearing both lawyers, Justice Aneke fixed February 15th for the ruling on the bail application and ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional facility.

The charge against the actress reads: “That you Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin on January 28, 2023 at Monarch event centre, Lekki, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court whilst dancing during a social occasion tampered with the sum of N100, 000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same in the said occasion and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 21 (1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.”

It would be recalled that the actress (Oluwadarasimi) was arrested by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Fraud Related Offences Commission (ICPC), on February 1, 2023 along Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, and was handed over to the EFCC for investigation.

The 31-year-old was arrested after the video of her spraying and stepping on the newly redesigned naira notes at a party surfaced online.

In the viral video, she was also seen flaunting wads of the new naira notes.

FRSC to deploy 200 mobile courts, 1,044 vehicles, 144 motorbikes for Easter patrol

The Federal Road Safety says it will deploy over 1,044 vehicles and 144 motorbikes for its Easter patrols across the country.

It also disclosed that 200 mobile courts would be on duty during the patrol operations scheduled to commence on March 29 and end April 2, 2024.

The information is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Corps Public Education Officer at the FRSC headquarters, Jonas Agwu.

He said the Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, had directed all Commanding Officers to ensure full deployment of staff during the Easter patrols.

This, according to him, is for maximum visibility, prompt removal of obstructions and ease of movement on all highways across the country.

Specifically, he said over 743 patrol vehicles, 184 administrative vehicles, 92 ambulances, 23 tow trucks and 144 motorbikes would be deployed as part of the patrol logistics.

“Furthermore, reflective jackets , traffic cones, tyre pressure gauges, a number of extricating machines and digital breathalyzers are part of the tools set aside for the special operations.

“Added to the above is a total of 23 Help Areas mobilised to ensure prompt removal of obstructions, and rescue operations during the period,” he stated.

“This, he said, would be in addition to the 15 traffic control camps dedicated to identifying traffic gridlock areas to be manned by its personnel on a 24/7 basis.

He quoted Biu as assuring members of the public that to achieve the objectives of the special operations, “the Corps will combine the engagement of the motoring public through purposeful and impactful public education programmes, strengthening of surveillance activities to regulate unprofessional excesses, sustained effective patrol operations as well as adequate monitoring on the highways.

“To this end, the Corps would carry out aggressive enforcement including conducting over 200 Mobile Courts operations.”

The focus, the FRSC said, would be checking offences such as seeding and dangerous driving/overtaking, lane indiscipline/route violation, road obstructions, use of phone while driving, overloading, seatbelt/child restraint use violations, passenger’s manifest violation, operation of mechanical deficient and rickety vehicles, latching and twist-locks violation, illegal use of the Spy Number Plates.

The statement also said for effective monitoring and prompt response, the Corps has put in place a Situation Room at the National Headquarters to monitor the activities across the country, collate and process information for dissemination to relevant commands and stakeholders as the case may be.

“This is in addition to 28 Road Traffic Crash Clinics and 53 Zebra points located along the major routes. This would be covered by 92 ambulances to be fully utilized for prompt response to crashes and rescue of injured victims to hospitals for more professional attention,” it said.

Adams, Igboho rift worsens as Ooni’s peace move fails

A peace move by Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to reconcile the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, and Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho), has broken down.

The two leaders have been at loggerheads, following an alleged  leaked telephone conversation between Adams and another person on Igboho.

Igboho, in a letter dated March 25, 2024 through his lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, demanded an immediate retraction of what he described as “scandalous, malicious and defamatory statement” made against him by Adams.

He also demanded that within 48 hours, the Aare should publish in two national publications that he falsely accused him or be ready to pay a damage of N10 billion.

But Adams warned that his silence should not be taken as cowardice on the alleged defamation of character.

He said the allegations were deliberate efforts by some individuals to drag his name in the mud.

Speaking on the controversy surrounding the alleged audio clips, Adams said he was ready to set the records straight on the alleged defamation.

He said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, that the ongoing suit by Igboho and the Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Tayo Ayinde, was a grand conspiracy to discredit him.

Adams said, “The reason for my silence in the midst of the various legal and media infractions by Igboho and Ayinde was not because I am a coward, but because of the initial interventions of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, other prominent Obas and several other important personalities in Yorubaland.

“But with the ongoing lies and aspersions against my person, I think it is time for me to come out open and set the record straight.

“Though my legal team have done what was required of them, I need to state it clearly that the audio clip generating the squabbles was a distorted and disjointed content of a private conversation which held way back in 2021 with a US-based younger brother of a friend.

“The conversation was initiated by the young man who claimed he wanted a reconciliation between myself, Igboho and some other people. It was while responding on reasons for reconciliation at the time that he mentioned the names of the two people.”

“In the said audio, I said it repeatedly that though it was very difficult to believe, there’s an unconfirmed rumour allegedly linking Igboho to the murder of the late Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

“My statement was not done in bad faith and it was purely a private conversation. It is surprising how a private conversation held almost four years ago would suddenly turn up in the hands of Igboho.

“To discerning minds, it is obvious that Igboho unlawfully invaded my privacy, bugged a private conversation and inappropriately used the same on several social media platforms.

“Before now, precisely in early March, the same people had bombarded the media space about my heritage. The same people had claimed I was of Tapa, Nupe extraction. In another breath, they alleged that I requested the sum of N20 billion from the organisers of the Yoruba Security Conference, held in Ile Ife, Osun state on 29 February, 2024.

“They followed up these dastardly acts by invading and intruding on my privacy. My legal team are presently working on all these.

“However, on the issue of my brother, Tayo Ayinde, let me make it clear here that I repeatedly said that whatever was said was a rumour that couldn’t be substantiated or made public. But for their sinister motives, it was Igboho that bugged my telephone, published and made it public.

“The picture has now become clearer that they resorted to the audio clip blackmail after they failed in their earlier attempt to rubbish my name.”
