Defence Minister Musa Identifies Four Key Challenges Undermining Nigeria’s Security

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has outlined four major factors impeding the country’s efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, and insecurity across Nigeria. Musa, speaking in a recent interview, emphasised that addressing these challenges requires national cooperation, intelligence sharing, and strict anti-crime measures.

According to the minister, the four key obstacles hindering Nigeria’s security operations are:

  1. Community Complicity – Some residents reportedly provide criminals with food, shelter, and intelligence, which sustains insurgency and banditry. Musa urged communities to cooperate with security agencies to curb violence.
  2. Porous Borders – Illegal cross-border movements of weapons and criminals continue to fuel insecurity. Strengthening border surveillance and control is critical, the minister stressed.
  3. Weak Grassroots Intelligence – Timely and reliable community intelligence is essential for preventing attacks. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities promptly.
  4. Ransom Payments and Negotiations – Musa warned that negotiating with kidnappers or paying ransoms encourages more kidnappings and criminal activity, undermining national security.

The minister highlighted the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration, particularly between the Ministries of Defence and Interior, to enhance coordinated operations and intelligence sharing. He also stressed that state governments should avoid negotiating with criminals, as such deals could weaken ongoing security efforts.

Musa’s comments come amid rising insecurity in Nigeria, with frequent reports of kidnappings, bandit attacks, and insurgent activities affecting communities, schools, and highways. Analysts say tackling these issues requires a mix of military strategy, community engagement, and technological support.
