Edo: Obaseki speaks as Gov Okpebholo set to probe past govt

Former Governor Godwin Obaseki has reacted to the move by the government of Governor Monday Okpebholo to probe the previous administration.

Okpebholo on Sunday approved the formation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate his predecessor, Obaseki’s administration.

Members of the committee are scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday.

Reacting, Crusoe Osagie, media aide to Obaseki, has described the probe of his principal’s administration as a “smokescreen” to cover the incompetence of the Okpebholo administration.

According to Osagie, the probe is an attempt to “distract from glaring incompetence and lack of direction” on the part of the current administration. He emphasized that Obaseki’s administration was “one of the most transparent, accountable, and prudent governments in the history of Nigeria.”

“Our attention has been drawn to a laughable and utterly ridiculous statement by the Monday Okpebholo’s administration setting up a 14-member state assets verification committee to probe the administration of his predecessor, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki,” the statement reads.

“This is another in the list of the barrage of meaningless probes which the governor and his directionless government is embarking on since they got into Dennis Osadebey avenue through the back door.

“From probing civil servants’ employment to probing ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), and probing vehicles and other assets of government, among others, the governor-select has continued to show that he is bereft of ideas and lacks a clear vision for the development of the state

“He has therefore resorted to these charades of empty probes to buy time and distract from his incompetence and unpreparedness for office.

“He should stop his futile and failed attempt to fool the people of Edo State who have already seen him for who he truly is: a politician out of his depth who has become a tool in the hands of his many godfathers who are thirsty for vendetta, having for long been denied access to the people’s patrimony by the immediate past government of His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

“It is on record that the Obaseki administration achieved an unprecedented level of transparency in governance, laying a solid foundation for fiscal discipline, which was why it was able to accomplish the numerous milestones recorded across various sectors of the state.

“So, we know what their plans are with the diversionary probes. It is just a smokescreen to mask the governor-select’s incompetence and unpreparedness for office, having come into power through a stolen mandate.

“We want to advise Okpebholo to focus on governance and improving the lives of Edo people rather than waste state resources masking his incompetence in meaningless probes.

“Edo people are watching and his short-span government which lasts until the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) reclaims its mandate duly given to it by Edo voters will be judged not by the noise it makes but by the impact it delivers.”

Nigerian Army appoints Onyinyechi Anele as first female spokesperson

The Nigerian Army (NA) has appointed Onyinyechi Anele, a lieutenant colonel, as acting director of army public relations.

She is the first woman to be appointed to the position.

Markus Kangye, director of defence media operations, confirmed Anele’s appointment to newsmen.

Anele will officially succeed Onyema Nwachukwu, a major general, on April 22.

Prior to her appointment, Anele worked at the department of civil-military relations.

She once served as the public relations officer in the office of the chief of army staff. She is a member of Direct Regular Course 15 and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

Nwachukwu spent over three years as the army’s spokesperson. He was appointed in June 2021 following a major reshuffling in the military.

Nwachukwu served three Chief of Army Staffs as army image maker, starting with Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya (Rtd), Late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, and the incumbent COAS, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede.

Meanwhile, the NA discredited a viral video on the lack of ammunition, explaining that the trending video footage is recycled with the obnoxious and malicious intent of denigrating the Nigerian Army.

Outgoing spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, said: “The attention of the NA has been drawn to an old video posted on various social media platforms by unscrupulous elements showing troops chanting, ‘Enough Is Enough: They’re Playing Politics With People’s Lives, Without Ammunition.’”

To this end, the Nigerian Army clarified that the said video is an old audio-visual being recycled with the obnoxious and malicious intent of denigrating the Nigerian Army, particularly at a time when the institution is doing everything to reinvigorate its efforts in containing security challenges bedevilling the country.

Nwachukwu said that while it is needless to join issues with such unpatriotic elements, the service further clarified that it is not lacking in the requisite logistics to carry out its constitutional mandates. This, he said, is evident in the series of successes recorded in various theatres of operations.

“As the NA continues to count on the support of well-meaning Nigerians through the provision of credible information that could enhance the surmounting of the security challenges bedevilling the nation, the general public is once again enjoined to refrain from circulating such mischievous content, as it not only constitutes a distraction to ongoing operations but also serves to dampen the morale of the troops.

“The despicable act of recycling an old video just to gain traction on social media is, therefore, undignifying and a complete distraction to the noble course of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.”

He enjoined the public to always fact-check their information before sharing the content in order to prevent the spread of fake and misleading narratives.
