The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, January 13, 2025, presented four additional witnesses in the ongoing trial of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman.
The trial is being heard by Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, obtained by Chronicle NG, Mamman is facing a 12-count charge filed by the EFCC, accusing him of conspiracy to commit money laundering involving N33,804,830,503.73.
At Monday’s proceedings, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, informed the court of plans to further establish the case by presenting four new witnesses identified as compliance officers from four banks: Zenith, UBA, GTB, and Wema.
“The EFCC was prepared to further prove its case with four more witnesses: PW4, 5, 6, and 7, whom he said were Compliance Officers at Zenith, UBA, GTB and Wema Banks, respectively,” Oyedepo stated.

After verifying the documents as authentic bank records, the prosecuting counsel tendered them as evidence in court.
Justice Omotosho subsequently adjourned the trial to January 22, 23, and 24, 2025, for further hearing.

Housewife bags death sentence with sister for killing co-wife in Minna
A High Court sitting in Minna, the Niger State capital, has sentenced one Amina Aliyu, a housewife, and her sister, Aishat Mohammed to death by hanging for the brutal killing of her co-wife, Hafsat Fatima Aliyu.
The youngest sister of the accused person, Zainab, who was alleged to have participated in the murder also received life imprisonment due to her age at the time the crime was committed.
The accused persons had conspired and killed the deceased in March 2021, at the family residence in Barkin Saleh, a suburb of Minna, the state capital.
The two accused persons – Amina and Aishat – were convicted for murdering Hafsat, after hitting her with a pestle from behind in the kitchen on the fateful day.

According to the prosecutor, the accused persons later set the lifeless body on fire to make it look as if she died of fire incident in the kitchen.
During the proceedings, which spanned three years, four witnesses testified, including Sani Aliyu, the husband of the deceased, who recounted how Amina and her sisters conspired and killed Hafsat
Justice Balkisu Gambo Yusuf of Minna High Court 7, while sentencing the accused persons said that the prosecutor had proven his case beyond doubt, adding that: “The punishment for culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code is death.”
However Peter Omale, the defence counsel, urged leniency for Zainab, highlighting her status as a minor at the time of the crime.
Justice Yusuf concurred, admitting that, “As of 2021, when the offence was committed, the ACJA excluded anyone below 18 from facing the death penalty.”

Minister orders removal of speed bumps on highways nationwide
Minister orders removal of speed bumps on highways nationwide
Works of Works. David Umahi, has ordered the removal of speed bumps on the country’s highways to improve traffic flow.
He stated this at a two-day Retreat for Federal Ministry of Works Highway Engineers and Managerial Staff in Abuja on Friday.
The retreat had the theme ‘Ensuring Delivery of Mr President’s Agenda on Road Infrastructural Development’.
The minister said the order to dismantle the speed bumps was necessary because some were haphazardly done causing accidents and elongating travel time.
He said, “I came through one of the federal routes and for a journey that is supposed to last like one hour within that stretch, it lasted like three hours because every 20 metres you will see a bump.
“Although there is nothing wrong with speed bumps in certain designated locations, there is an approved technical design for bumps.
“There are also allowable locations for bumps, and that is what we want to do. So the National Assembly has directed that these speed bumps should be dismantled.”

Umahi said the ministry had noticed some speed bumps were a menace and causing multiple accidents and deaths.
“Some speed bumps are high, touching the bottom plates of vehicles; that is not desirable. It defeats the aim.
“So, this is what we are saying, and that is what the National Assembly is saying. The ministry as well as motorists wants them to dismantle it.”
Umahi said subsequently, for any speed bump to be constructed, applications would be made to controllers for the locations through the Permanent Secretary and to the minister for approval after meeting technical compliance.
He added that there must also be a safe side distance of not less than 100 metres and warning for motorists to beware.
Speaking on infrastructure development, Umahi said President Bola Tinubu’s massive infrastructure development was aimed at providing the much needed impetus to stimulate the economy and improve the lives of the citizenry.
He therefore, said the retreat was aimed at educating participants to properly understand the president’s renewed hope agenda with specific reference to road infrastructure development among others.

The Minister of State for Works, Mr Bello Goronyo, commended the President’s infrastructure development agenda, saying that it was putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians.
The permanent secretary in the ministry, Olufunso Adebiyi, said the Federal Road Safety Corps’ record revealed that accidents were traceable to reckless driving, drunk driving, disregard for road instructions and unauthorised crossing of the road among others.
Adebiyi urged the engineers to step up and curb some of the irregularities, noting that the ministry was committed to building their capacity to deliver on the administration’s agenda.

I have proof Queen Dami bought her child, says late Alaafin’s daughter
Adeyemi Adebisi Aminat, daughter of the late Alaafin of Oyo, has alleged that Queen Dami, her late father’s ex-wife, committed paternity fraud concerning her child with the late monarch.

Adebisi further alleged that Queen Dami bought the child in Port Harcourt, claiming to have DNA test results and evidence to substantiate her accusations. She said the tests were conducted before the Alaafin’s death.
“The Alaafin throne is not to be rubbished. The disrespect is unbecoming. Don’t play with me, Dami. I have all the blood tests and evidence before Kakabiesi passed. Take the child back to the rightful owner,” Adebisi declared in one of her posts.
She also criticized Queen Dami for her conduct, claiming the former queen was engaging in online drama while having unresolved issues about her child’s paternity.
