El‑Rufai Claims APC Members Are Shielded from Corruption Allegations
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai has ignited controversy by asserting that members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are rarely accused of corruption, raising fresh questions about political bias and accountability in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja, El‑Rufai argued that while Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies and legal frameworks exist, enforcement remains uneven and politically influenced. He suggested that politicians aligned with the ruling APC often avoid scrutiny, while opposition figures face greater risks of investigation.

“The truth is, some politicians appear untouchable because of their party affiliation,” El‑Rufai said, emphasizing that selective enforcement erodes public trust and weakens governance. He called for strengthened institutions, judicial reforms, and truly independent oversight to ensure that all political actors are held accountable, regardless of party.
His comments come amid ongoing debates over the role of political influence in anti-corruption investigations. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently reassured the public that investigations continue irrespective of party, citing examples of high-profile figures under scrutiny despite ruling party affiliations.
Civil society groups and political analysts have noted that El‑Rufai’s remarks highlight a persistent perception of bias in Nigeria’s anti-graft enforcement, which could impact public confidence and electoral integrity ahead of upcoming political cycles.
