Thai Police Arrest 11 Nigerians in International Romance Scam Crackdown
Bangkok, Thailand — Thai police have arrested 11 Nigerian nationals in a major crackdown on an alleged international romance scam targeting victims both in Thailand and abroad. The arrests were made during a coordinated raid on a Muang Thong Thani condominium in Nonthaburi province, following months of investigation into online fraud operations.
Authorities launched the operation after receiving complaints from victims, including a Thai woman in Nong Khai, who claimed she was defrauded of over 2 million Thai baht by a man posing as a Chinese engineer on social media. Investigators traced the fraudulent activity to a broader network reportedly orchestrated by the suspects.

During the raid, police also apprehended 2 Ivorians believed to be part of the syndicate. Several of the Nigerians had overstayed their visas, while others had entered the country illegally through the Laos border. Officers seized 34 electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, containing evidence of the fraud and suspected cryptocurrency transactions linked to the operation.
Thai authorities confirmed that this arrest is part of an ongoing campaign against online romance and cyber scams, which have defrauded victims of millions of baht. Earlier crackdowns had also involved both Thai and foreign nationals, highlighting Thailand’s intensified efforts to combat cross-border cybercrime.
Police have urged the public to be cautious of online romance schemes and report suspicious activities, stressing that scammers often use fake identities and elaborate stories to lure victims into sending money.
