Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo wins second term by slim margin

The Ghanaian electoral commission on Wednesday declared incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo the winner of the country’s presidential election.

Seventy-six-year-old Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) beat his opponent and predecessor John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with 51.59 per cent of the votes.

More than 13 million ballots were cast out of a total electorate of 17 million and across 38,000 polling stations throughout the country. Voters also chose 275 lawmakers for the national parliament.

Five people were reportedly killed during the election just as the process was mired by accusations of fraud before the official results were released.

But Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana Jean Adukwei Mensa commended the commission’s workers for operating the smooth conduct of the poll.

Although the results of one constituency remained disputed, Mensa said that even if all remaining votes went for Mahama, it would not change the overall outcome.

Specifically, Akufo-Addo scored 6,730,413 or 51.59 per cent of total votes while Mahama received 6,214,889 or 47.36 per cent of total votes.

Mensa said, “On the basis of the foregoing election results and by the powers vested in me as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and the interim officer of the election, it is my duty and honour to declare Nana Akufo-Addo as president-elect of the Republic of Ghana.”

But Mahama on Tuesday accused Akufo-Addo of showing “credentials that are very undemocratic” and harnessing the military to sway the outcome.

“You cannot use the military to try and overturn some of the results in constituencies that we have won. We will resist any attempts to subvert the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people,” the 62-year-old former president said.

Akufo-Addo and Mahama had on Friday signed a peace pact.

I never said I’d be VP to anyone in 2027 – Peter Obi

I never said I’d be VP to anyone in 2027 – Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has denied saying he has agreed on a deal to become a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

He also said that contrary to reports, he remains committed to the Labour Party and that anyone looking for a collaboration must state their true intentions.

In a series of posts via his official X handle on Saturday, September 14, Obi said he is ready to partner with those who share his vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress. He emphasised he is not desperate to become president or any position, but is determined to see Nigeria develop.

According to the former Anambra State Governor, he does not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.

“I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV. In that interview, I took the opportunity it provided to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.

Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record. I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.

I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.” he said

He further stated that he is committed to bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms.

“I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions. When 2027 arrives, if I decide to run for any office, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election.

I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living and pull people out of poverty.

My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words. For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone and it’s unequivocal.

I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria. My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing” he said
