Google Allows Users to Change Gmail Addresses Without Losing Data
Google has unveiled a long-awaited feature that allows Gmail users to change their existing @gmail.com email addresses without losing data or access to core Google services.
According to an update on Google’s account help page, users can now replace their old Gmail address with a new one while retaining all emails, files, photos, and service integrations. The feature addresses years of complaints from users stuck with outdated or embarrassing email addresses created long ago.
Notably, the updated guidance currently appears only on the Hindi version of Google’s support page, suggesting the rollout may begin in India or other Hindi-speaking markets. The English-language support page still states that Gmail addresses “usually cannot be changed.”
However, the Hindi page indicates that the feature is being gradually rolled out to all users, pointing to a broader global launch in the near future.

Under the new policy, users who change their Gmail address will automatically keep their original email address as an alias. Emails sent to the old address will continue to arrive in the inbox, and the original address will remain valid for signing in to services such as Google Drive, YouTube, and Google Maps.
Previously, users who wanted a new Gmail address were required to create an entirely new account and manually transfer data—a complex process that often disrupted third-party app integrations.
Google confirmed that all existing data, including emails, messages, photos, and files, will remain unchanged after the email address update. Users can also revert to using their old email address at any time, according to a translated version of the Hindi support page.
However, some restrictions apply. Accounts that change their Gmail address will be unable to create another new Gmail address for 12 months, and the newly chosen address cannot be deleted.
