Gov Soludo Orders Closure of Onitsha Main Market Over Traders’ Defiance of Sit‑At‑Home
The Anambra State Government, led by Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the closure of Onitsha Main Market for one week after traders failed to comply with directives to end the weekly sit‑at‑home practice.
Governor Soludo, during an inspection of the market, expressed disappointment that many traders kept their shops shut despite repeated appeals and enhanced security deployment. The shutdown aims to reinforce government authority, ensure normal economic activities, and discourage further sit‑at‑home compliance in the state.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Army, were deployed to enforce the closure, marking a firm stance against continued defiance. The governor warned that if traders continue to ignore directives, the market shutdown could be extended beyond a week.
This action forms part of the administration’s broader effort to restore business confidence, attract investments, and eliminate disruptions caused by the sit‑at‑home culture, which has affected commerce and livelihoods in Onitsha and other parts of Anambra State.
