Gunmen, police engage in shoot-out at ex-Bayelsa governor’s residence

Gunmen on Wednesday night invaded ex-governor of Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson’s residence  amd engaged the police in a shootout that led to the death of a policeman in the process.

The police were said to have repelled the attack by the armed men who invaded the residence through the Forcados River.

The ex-governor and members of the family were not in the house during the attack.

But a police officer who reportedly led the operation was killed in the attack.

The former governor condoled with the immediate family of the late police officer, the Inspector General of Police, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of police and the entire police team on the death of the policeman.

Dickson said, “This period is indeed a trying one for the country, the police and the security agencies.”

He also confirmed that the police had commenced investigation into the incident.

He expressed optimism that those behind the cruel act would be fished out and made to face the law.

Governor Dickson called on his supporters across the Ijaw nation give relevant information to the police to aid their investigation into the crime.

He urged everybody to remain calm to await the outcome of the police investigation.

Just in: CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele suspended

 

President Bola Tinubu has suspended Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The announcement came on Friday from the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.

Willie Bassey, director of information at the SGF office, in a statement said the suspension was with immediate effect.

The statement read, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.

“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.”

We don’t envy Tinubu, says Sultan during monarchs visit to State House

Traditional on Friday paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at State House conference centre, Abuja.

They were led by Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar Sa’ad, who said the visit was customary by the monarchs whenever there is a change in leadership of the country.

According to the Sultan, the monarchs do not envy Tinubu at this time, with the numerous challenges facing the country.
He, however, expressed confidence that with the combination of himself and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, they would deliver.

“We thank God for the smooth way the elections took place. Many negative people thought this country will collapse but we are still here,” he said.

“We are here for you, for our people and our country. If you don’t reach out to us, we will reach out to you.
“We wish you the most successful tenure in good health.”

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who also spoke at the meeting, urged President Tinubu to make use of traditional rulers to tackle the issue of insecurity in the country.

The monarch said Tinubu should not underestimate what traditional rulers could do, given their closeness to the people.

“There are areas we will like to work with you, one of which is security. It is time to use us the more, we are not saying we are idle…but to make your work easier, use us,” he said.

“The foundation of this country today are the traditional rulers. We are here to pledge our loyalty and support. We want to work with you to ensure you leave a legacy.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the meeting along with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

Other monarchs present are Emir of Kano, Obi of Onitsha, Tor Tiv, Etsu Nupe, Deji of Akure, Shehu of Borno, Elegushi of Ikate, Jaja of Opobo, Lamido of Adamawa, Emir of Zauzzau, Gbong Gwom Jos, Attah Igala, Alake of Egbaland, Shehu of Borno, a representative of the Oba of Benin.

Sanwo-Olu appoints NPC commissioner Salu-Hundeyin as new SSG

 

Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the first appointment of aides as he named Tayo Ayinde as his Chief of Staff.

The govermor also reappointed Gboyega Soyanwo as Deputy Chief of Staff.

The governor announced this on Thursday on the state television.

He made Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin as Secretary to the State Government.

Salu-Hundeyin, who is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, replaces Mrs Folashade Jaji, a former Lagos Head of Service.

She was untill her latest appointment Lagos Commissioner of National Population Commission.
