Gunmen Strike Niger Again as Police Station, Church Are Set Ablaze, Five Kidnapped

Armed bandits have launched a coordinated attack in Niger State, setting ablaze a police station and a church, while kidnapping several residents in what locals described as a terrifying overnight raid.

The attack occurred in Agwara Local Government Area, where the gunmen reportedly stormed the community in the early hours of Sunday. Witnesses said the assailants arrived in large numbers, firing sporadically to instill fear and force residents to flee their homes.

During the assault, the attackers overran the Divisional Police Station, overpowering officers on duty before setting the facility on fire. The destruction of the police outpost left the community without immediate security presence, worsening panic among residents.

The bandits also burned part of a church building, causing significant damage and further heightening tension in the area. Homes were reportedly looted, with food items and valuables carted away by the attackers.

At least five residents were abducted during the raid, while unconfirmed reports indicate that an elderly woman may have lost her life in the chaos. Many villagers have since fled to neighboring communities, fearing a repeat attack.

Residents lamented the recurring insecurity in the area, noting that Niger State has continued to witness frequent bandit attacks, kidnappings, and arson, despite ongoing security operations.

Security authorities have confirmed the incident and said search-and-rescue operations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims.
