Hushpuppi finally gets 11-year sentence, to pay $1.7m to two victims
A United States District Court for the Central District of California has sentenced an Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abass Olorunwa, popularly known as Hushpuppi, to 11 years and three months in prison.
The 40-year-old man was sentenced by the US District Judge Otis D. Wright II, who also ordered him to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two fraud victims.
Hushpuppi pleaded guilty in April 2021 to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering.
He was arrested in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, in June 2020 and has remained in federal custody since his expulsion from the UAE.
A statement released by the US court on the case read, “Abbas bragged on social media about his lavish lifestyle – a lifestyle funded by his involvement in transnational fraud and money laundering conspiracies targeting victims around the world,” said United States Attorney Martin Estrada.
It stated, “Money laundering and business email compromise scams are a massive international crime problem, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement and international partners to identify and prosecute those involved, wherever they may be.
“Ramon Abbas, aka ‘Hushpuppi,’ targeted both American and international victims, becoming one of the most prolific money launderers in the world,” said Don Alway, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
“Abbas leveraged his social media platforms – where he amassed a considerable following – to gain notoriety and to brag about the immense wealth he acquired by conducting business email compromise scams, online bank heists and other cyber-enabled fraud that financially ruined scores of victims and provided assistance to the North Korean regime. This significant sentence is the result of years’ worth of collaboration among law enforcement in multiple countries and should send a clear warning to international fraudsters that the FBI will seek justice for victims, regardless of whether criminals operate within or outside United States borders.”

Appeal court takes over NURTW case as NIC withdraws
The National Industrial Court has withdrawn from a case involving Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, Board of Trustees chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa’s ambition to return as president of the union over lack of jurisdiction.
The industrial court’s decision was made to avoid conflict with the Court of Appeal, where the matter is already being heard.
Before the NIC announced its decision to hands-off the case, the defendants’ counsel, Mr. O.I. Olorundare SAN, had informed the court that the matter is currently before the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, and that the industrial court could not continue to adjudicate on the same matter.
The counsel cited authorities to support his claim, adding that the National Industrial Court does not have concurrent jurisdiction with the Court of Appeal.
The presiding judge, O.O. Oyewunmi, struck out the case, stating that the Appeal Court had taken over the matter and that the Industrial Court must respect the hierarchy of courts.
Alhaji Yasin and six others took the case to the Appeal Court, challenging the decision of the industrial court recognising a delegates’ conference held on May 24, 2023, where Baruwa was proclaimed as President of the union for a second term in office.
With the latest NIC judgement, both parties will now proceed to defend their positions at the Court of Appeal and await the final judgement.

A Police Inspector, Nkwa Nnamdi, attached to 23 Police Mobile Force, Keffi, Lagos State, has been arrested and detained for being in possession of a car snatched at gunpoint.
This was after an unregistered Toyota Camry saloon car snatched at gunpoint was found in his possession.
Incidentally, the car was reported stolen by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, M. Alamutu, attached to 2 PMF, Keffi, Lagos State.
The car belonged to Alamutu’s younger brother, Daniel Ayomide, and was snatched at gunpoint on April 22.

When Inspector Nnamdi was questioned on how he got the car, he claimed that the vehicle was handed over to him by a man he simply identified as Evans at Eternal Filling Station, Iju Road, Lagos State for him to drive the vehicle to Benin in Edo State.
A Situation Report stated: “On 23rd of April at about 4pm, an information was received from ASP Alamutu attached to 2PMF Keffi Lagos, that his younger brother namely, Daniel Ayomide unregistered Toyota Camry s/car white colour was stolen on gun point on the 22rd of April 2024 at about 8:30pm, was sighted along Iju road.”

An Inspector of Police, whose name is yet to be ascertained, has allegedly cut off his wife’s hand over what was confirmed as “a minor disagreement over N20,000”, Vanguard is reporting.
Vanguard News said it gathered the Inspector left the money at home in the Dong area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
By the time he returned to take the money, it was no longer where he left it, leading to an argument between him and his wife.
In the heat of the argument, he reportedly harmed his wife.
He has since been arrested and detained at the Plateau State Police Command Criminal Investigation Department.
The spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the development to Vanguard News.

Alabo, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vanguard on the phone: “We are aware of the incident.
“The man is an Inspector.
“Right now, he is at the State CID and the investigation is ongoing.
“He had a minor misunderstanding with his wife over some money.
“They had an argument over some N20,000 he kept in the house and he said he was looking for the money to do something and an argument ensued.
“The case is under investigation.”
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, also told Vanguard News: “The wife is pregnant.
“She refused to give the man N3,000 from N20,000.
“The argument was heated and before we knew it, the man cut off her hand.
“No one can say why he did that but we are concerned about her.
“She was rushed to a hospital.”
