I apologize for the misconception created – UTME Candidate [+Video]

A candidate, Miss Aminat Suleiman Yahaya, who was featured in a widely-circulated video on tiktok and other social media platforms, alleging that she was rescheduled repeatedly to sit the Board’s 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) in Abuja, while staying in Ibadan, has apologized to the Board for misleading the public and attempting to embarrass the Board. The public apology was given at a press conference in Ibadan in the presence of a social media influencer, Mr. Saheed Oladele, who created the widely-circulated video.

At the press conference, Miss Yahaya had apologized for the embarrassment she had caused the Board stating that she and her sister had their SIM cards in one phone and, as such, received messages sent to both of them.

She disclosed that when her sister was invited for her examination, she had followed her to the centre in Abuja but she was not allowed to sit the examination as she was not invited.

She admitted that she was never invited to retake any examination other than that first time. She also stated that she had registered to sit the examination in Abuja and not Ibadan as erroneously been put out in the public.

Earlier, Mr. Oladele had apologized and explained that he made the widely-circulated video based on the distorted information made available to him and tendered his unreserved apology as, according to him, he holds the Board in high esteem. He added that whatever he did was not to tarnish the image of the Board but to draw its attention to the challenges purportedly being faced by the candidate. He declared his undying respect for the Board for its prompt response to the issue raised.

He confirmed that the candidate was never rescheduled for any examination other than the one she had taken in Ibadan adding that the insinuation that the candidate was compelled to travel to Abuja is unfortunate and was never intended to be so.

According to him, what actually happened was that the candidate registered for the UTME in Abuja and had consequently picked Abuja as her examination town but had, in the interval, relocated to Ibadan, a situation which he said could not be attributed to the Board. He said he later discovered that the candidate had a sister, who also sat the UTME in Abuja, and both of them had their SIMs in one phone, which was part of the factors that caused the confusion.

It is to be recalled that Mr. Oladele had posted a video, which went viral with Miss Aminat Suleiman Yahaya, crying that after sitting her UTME in Abuja and going back to her base in Ibadan, the Board had rescheduled her to take the examination in Abuja, and after that she was again sent a message rescheduling her for another examination in Abuja. The
video drew the attention of the Board and it had to investigate the matter to establish the truth.

The Head, Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, at the press conference appealed to bloggers and other media influencers to always check out their stories before going public.

“If Mr. Oladele had sought our own side of the story, he would have got the true position of the story,” he said.

He cautioned the public against believing stories being shared online hook, line and sinker, while stating that the Board would not shy away from admitting its faults where necessary especially within the conduct of the Board’s UTME by doing the needful such as rescheduling candidates to retake their examination where examination had failed rather than pretending as if nothing had happened, but the Board would not accept a situation whereby candidates would deliberately try to tarnish its image

Parents, group kick against UI increase in students acceptance fee

Parents of newly admitted students of the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, have kicked against the increase in the acceptance fee payable by the students.

The university has announced on its website that prospective students are to pay N50,000 as their acceptance fee instead of N37,500 previously paid.

The increase has generated negative reactions with parents complaining bitterly about it.

They said there was no justification for such a decision by the institution.

On its website, the school’s statement partly read, “Candidates who have been offered provisional admission and have generated their admission letters on CAPS are hereby advised to proceed with the payment of a non-refundable Acceptance Fee of N50,000 only.”

One of the parents, also a lecturer at the university, was reported by The Guardian as saying, “It is serious. I have to pay an acceptance fee of N50,000 for my child.”

Adejoke Akinpelu, the principal assistant registrar and public relations officer of the Directorate of Public Communication, said only the registrar could speak on reasons the management came up with the increment.

Concerned group

Meanwhile, a concerned group has called for the cancellation of UI’s acceptance fee increase.

The group, Concerned Students Against Tuition Fees (CSATF) Movement, in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Aduwo Ayodele, and Secretary, Kareem Abdullahi, called for the cancellation of the acceptance fee increase.

The group said it was against the decision of the university management to hike the acceptance fee from N37,500 to N50,000.

I didn’t know anything about education when I was appointed minister – Adamu Adamu

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has expressed surprise at being appointed a minister in 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari for a sector he knew nothing about.

Adamu, who is the longest serving minister, stated this at a valedictory session with officials and heads of parastatals of the ministry on Thursday.

He said he had to apply wisdom by appointing some professors of education and other good hands, with the help of the officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to enable him kick off and make progress.

“I didn’t know anything about education sector when I was appointed Minister except superficially. But when Buhari decided to make me Minister of education, I called some people to assist me work on policy document on education because I was novice in the sector. I shared my idea with them and they assisted me greatly, and I remain grateful to them for these years,” he said.

The minister appreciated the President who found him worthy and trusted him with such a responsibility, “even when I was apparently not ready and unprepared for such task”.

He said, “I was busy making recommendations and suggestions to the President on who to appoint into his cabinet in 2015.”

JAMB announces deadline for sales of Direct Entry form

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that the ongoing 2023 Direct Entry e-PIN sales will close on Saturday, 26th May, while registration of those who obtained the e-PIN ends on Tuesday, 30th May 2023.

The 2023 DE registration, which commenced in February 2023, was extended for all desiring candidates to register and was, at a point, suspended to facilitate the incorporation of certain safeguards designed to enhance the sanctity of the exercise.

Acting Director, Public Affairs, JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja said the 2023 DE registration is unique among many others as it came with some features meant to enhance the Board’s capacity to permanently address those loopholes hitherto being exploited by some vested interests.

He said it was, therefore, not at all surprising to witness the surge in the number of candidates in one or two of the Board’s offices.

Benjamin added that the new regime which has exposed the quantum of cases of falsifications and other infractions in the DE value chain as reported is one of the many gains of the regulated DE registration exercise.

He said: “One good thing about the exercise is that the Board has been able to capture only deserving candidates with only pockets of outstanding candidates remaining in a couple of Board’s offices particularly in Lagos.

“Even here, the Board has adopted a scheduling system whereby candidates are allocated to specific days for their DE registration to preclude any further incidence of overcrowding.

“The Board has granted some registration access points to ETC/JKK to ensure that all desiring candidates in Lagos are registered.

“As such, all eligible candidates for the DE in Lagos can either visit our Ikoyi office to be registered or proceed to ETC/JKK Ikorodo Road Anthony to registered before the closing date.

“The attention of the Board has also been drawn to the unwholesome actions of some tutorial centres and some desperate parents, who are conniving with some A’ level tutorial centres to perpetrate acts prejudicial to the education sector and national interests.

“Consequently, the Board is restating its determination to always innovate means and ways of checkmating all acts of infractions and at the same time would not hesitate to impose appropriate sanctions on any A’level awarding institutions found wanting.
All A’level institutions are enjoined to be vigilant as there is a deliberate intention by desperate candidates to compromise their operations,” he said.

Benjamin, therefore, urged all genuine aspiring DE candidates, who are yet to register for the exercise to come out now to register as the Board would not entertain any further extension.
