Lagos govt to meet striking commercial drivers Wednesday as public transportation gets chaotic

Lagos State Government has fixed a meeting with aggrieved commercial drivers on Wednesday (November 2) as commuters went through harrowing experience on Monday, the first day of the drivers’ seven-day industrial action.

The Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria (JDWAN), an umbrella body for commercial drivers, had declared the seven-day strike over alleged extortion by the management of motor parks in Lagos.

The strike left commuters standing at their bus stops for hours on Monday and forced motorcyclists to take advantage of the situation.

A statement issued by Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, on Monday, the Lagos government said a meeting with the association had been scheduled for Wednesday.

The government, which recalled it had held a meeting with the drivers on October 28, said it was looking into their demands “with a view to finding permanent solutions to the issues raised by the association.”

The statement read in part, “Sequel to the announcement by JDWAN to embark on a seven-day strike starting from 31st October, 2022, the state government, through the Ministry of Transportation, had invited its leadership to a meeting on Friday, 28th October, 2022, despite its non-affiliation to any of the transport unions, such as NURTW and RTEAN, known to the state.”

He said most of the union members at the meeting were from the Badagry axis and it was resolved that the meeting be adjourned till Wednesday November 2nd, 2022 to have a larger house, which would include representatives of other recognised unions with a view to resolving the matter amicably.

While noting that the outcome of the second meeting scheduled for Wednesday would be made known to the public, Giwa urged members of JDWAN and other transporters to continue their daily work without fear of molestation and intimidation as security agencies had been directed to maintain law and order.

The Lagos government also warned those taking advantage of the strike by hiking transport fares “to desist from doing so or face the consequences of their illegal actions.”

At some of the bus stops, only private cars and minibuses popularly known as Korope were seen operating.

From Agege to Ifako-Ijaiye, Iyana-Ipaja to Ikeja, Egbeda to Ikotun, the situation was chaotic at many bus stops as commuters jostled for few available buses despite sudden hike in fares.

While some commuters grudgingly paid the high fares to connect to their destinations, others took to trekking long distances.

In a statement by JDWAN’s lawyer, Ayo Ademiluyi, he lamented “excessive and illegal ticketing and tolling” at almost every bus stop in the state.

According to him, commercial bus drivers have been sentenced to extortion and violent harassment by MC Oluomo’s men.

“On a daily basis, we lose half of our income to the motor park boys. We pay exorbitant charges at the garages and at every bus stop where we drop off passengers, whether we pick up passengers or not, we pay morning, afternoon and night. Some routes have 25 bus stops which also serve as illegal tax collection avenues,” the statement partly read.

“When we resist the extortion, we get arrested and pay N10,000 for bail to the police while the motor park boys go scot free and we also have to bail our buses separately.

“Lagos drivers also pay for entertainment, security, unit chairman’s food and many other ridiculous levies with threat of violence at any slight refusal by the drivers. This is the exact case of the popular parlance on exploitation of labourers, “baboon dey work and monkey dey chop”.

“Lagos commercial drivers work like elephants and eat like ants while the urchins under the aegis of motor park workers take a large chunk of our earnings. We can hardly fulfill our contractual obligations with our business partners, feed our family or afford maintenance or repair of our vehicles,” the statement added.

The commercial bus drivers demanded that only Lagos State Government’s ticket should be the only ticket in Lagos.

The statement said, “We kick against paying motor park thugs at every bus stop. All illegal money paid after we leave the garages and parks should be abolished immediately. Harassment of law enforcement agencies & intimidation with guns, cutlasses, and broken bottles by LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority), task force and RRS (Rapid Response Squad) must end immediately. They collaborate and hire thugs to attack and extort us every day without violating any law.”

Chief Sir Joseph Ebere Ezeokafor, the billionaire businessman and father of popular socialite Jowizaza, has regained his freedom alongside a Reverend Sister after spending several harrowing days in the custody of kidnappers in Anambra State. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed on Saturday, August 15, 2026, that the septuagenarian chairman of Jezco Group of Companies and the Reverend Sister, who were abducted by armed men at Ifite-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area, have been released and safely returned to their families.

Chief Ezeokafor was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday, August 4, 2026, while reportedly on his way to a prayer ground in Awka, Anambra State. He was travelling alone without any security personnel at the time of the incident, a practice his family described as a monthly routine, and his abduction had generated widespread concern across Anambra State and beyond, with security agencies coming under immense pressure to secure his release. The businessman was released late on Friday night and subsequently picked up by a family member near the boundary between Anambra and Enugu states, close to Ebenebe, near Awka. Described by a family member as an emerging location for kidnapping activities in the axis, the Ebenebe area has reportedly been where several victims have either been abducted or taken after being kidnapped elsewhere. Confirming the development, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command is currently taking necessary steps to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and obtain relevant information that will assist ongoing investigations and the identification of the perpetrators.

According to multiple reports, the abductors initially demanded N700 million from Ezeokafor’s family before allegedly increasing the ransom to N1.5 billion during negotiations. The family had reportedly accepted the initial N700 million demand as part of efforts to secure the businessman’s release, but sensing that there might be more money, the kidnappers subsequently raised their demand to N1.5 billion, after which they stopped further engagement with the family until their release on Saturday. A close family source claimed the family paid N1.5 billion to secure his release, though police have not officially confirmed whether any ransom was paid. The source told Punch that the family paid N1.5 billion for his release, with the kidnappers initially demanding N700 million, a figure which the victim’s family had accepted as part of efforts to secure their father’s release, but sensing some feelings that there may be more money, the kidnappers subsequently raised their demand to N1.5 billion, after which they stopped further engagement with the family until their release on Saturday. Although a police source had earlier confirmed to journalists during a police function in Awka on Friday that the family had paid the sum of N1.5 billion and was expected to be released soon, the police spokesperson declined to disclose whether ransom was paid.

The businessman’s abduction sparked tension within the Ezeokafor family, with his eldest daughter, Blessing, publicly blaming her younger brother, Eberechukwu (Jowizaza), for making their father a target through his flamboyant lifestyle on social media. In a series of Facebook posts, Blessing accused Jowizaza of flaunting wealth on social media despite the family’s alleged financial struggles, claiming that his public display of wealth may have attracted kidnappers to their father and influenced them to demand a higher ransom. The ongoing operation involves the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, the military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Agunechemba security operatives and other relevant security agencies, and the command appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in apprehending the perpetrators. Following his father’s release, Jowizaza took to Instagram on Saturday, August 15, 2026, to share his first public reaction with the caption “Forever grateful 🙏,” and the post, which gathered thousands of reactions within an hour, drew an outpouring of support from celebrities including Obi Cubana, Kiddwaya, and Cubana Chiefpriest, who flooded the comments with prayers and thanksgiving.

The Osun State Police Command has arrested a serving member of the State House of Assembly, Honourable Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji, alongside 146 suspected electoral mercenaries in the early hours of Saturday in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, as part of security operations ahead of the governorship election. The lawmaker, who represents Irewole/Isokan State Constituency, was arrested at his residence during a joint operation. Confirming the arrest, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the operation was carried out by the FBI-IRT as part of intensified measures to prevent activities capable of undermining the credibility of the poll. According to the police, no fewer than 200 Permanent Voter Cards were recovered from the residence during the raid.

In a video clip obtained after the arrest, Inaolaji was seen identifying himself and allegedly stating that he facilitated the movement of the 146 suspects into Osun State from neighbouring states to participate in the governorship election. The police said the allegation remains subject to further investigation. Ojelabi told journalists that the lawmaker was arrested in Ikire with about 146 suspected mercenaries in the early hours of Saturday, and the suspects were allegedly found camped at the lawmaker’s father’s residence, with preliminary investigations indicating they were brought into Osun State from Ondo State to participate in unlawful electoral activities.

In a separate operation at Babs Hotel, located behind the State High Court in Ede, operatives of the Anti-Robbery Section and the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested 33 suspected electoral mercenaries comprising 30 males and three females. Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were brought into Osun from Ondo State for alleged unlawful electoral activities, while four voters’ cards were recovered from them as exhibits. The suspects reportedly told investigators that an unidentified politician recruited them and promised financial rewards in exchange for voting, and the police said further investigation is ongoing to establish the identities and roles of those behind the alleged operation.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of election security, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful, free, fair and credible electoral process in Osun State, warning individuals and groups planning to engage in activities capable of undermining the election to desist, stressing that the police would deal decisively with electoral offences in accordance with the law. The Commissioner of Police in charge of election security had earlier disclosed that no fewer than 15,000 personnel had been deployed for the conduct of the poll, with a Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the operation.

The arrests come as voting commenced across the 30 local government areas of the state amid heightened security. The election is being conducted under tight security following pre-election concerns over possible violence and intimidation, and stakeholders have continued to call on voters and political actors to maintain peace throughout voting and collation. Meanwhile, the APC deputy governorship candidate, Kayode Adereti, who voted at Ward 11, Unit 3, Ilare in Ife Central, described the voter turnout as impressive and commended the security arrangements and the operation of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System. “The turnout is impressive and the security is perfect. The BVAS is working well, and everyone is happy here,” Adereti said, urging eligible voters to come out and participate, saying the future of the state depended on active citizen participation, and appealing to political parties and supporters to remain peaceful and allow voters to freely choose the next governor.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), most foreign nationals seeking employment must obtain a valid work permit and meet applicable eligibility requirements before beginning any work. The clarification aims to prevent visitors from mistakenly assuming that permission to enter Canada also permits them to take up employment. The government stated that having an electronic travel authorisation or visitor visa does not give you the right to work in Canada, and a visitor visa or eTA allows eligible travellers to seek entry to Canada as visitors, but it does not constitute authorization to work. Anyone intending to work should determine whether they require a work permit and confirm their eligibility before accepting employment, and IRCC advises prospective workers to establish which category applies to them before submitting an application.

The Canadian government has warned that working without required authorization can have serious immigration consequences. Individuals found working without explicit authorization risk immediate removal from Canada, a permanent fraud record with IRCC, and a five-year ban from re-entering the country. Such violations can also substantially damage future applications for permanent residence. Foreign nationals are therefore advised not to rely on a visitor visa or eTA as permission to work, and the government encourages prospective workers to use official Canadian immigration channels when applying for work authorization and to understand the requirements before accepting employment.

Canada has two main categories of work permits, each designed for different circumstances. An employer-specific work permit, also known as a closed permit, ties you to a specific employer, job role, and often work location, and the conditions are printed on the permit itself. If you change employers or jobs, you must apply for a new permit before starting the new position. Most employer-specific permits require your employer to first obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, though some positions are LMIA-exempt under the International Mobility Program. Submit your application online and save the confirmation, then provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) if required. Wait for processing, as times vary depending on the permit type and your country of residence — current estimates are employer-specific permits taking 60-180 days, PGWP taking 80-120 days, and spousal permits taking 100-150 days. If approved, you will receive a Port of Entry Letter of Introduction to present to border officers upon arrival in Canada. Your eTA or visitor visa will typically be issued at the same time as your work permit, so you do not need to apply separately or pay an additional fee.

Once a person receives authorization to work in Canada, there are additional requirements and services they may need to access. These include obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN), understanding workplace rights and labour standards, and complying with the conditions attached to the work permit. It is crucial to apply to renew permits at least 30 days before expiry to maintain legal status, and those who apply before expiry can remain under “maintained status” while their application is processed. Work permits carry strict conditions specifying permitted work type, authorized employer, and geographic region, and any deviation constitutes a breach of immigration law. Workers must stop working if their permit expires before they apply for a new one or if they fail to comply with permit conditions. Foreign workers who experience workplace abuse can access government procedures for reporting abusive employers, and IRCC also provides information on extending work permits, changing jobs or employers where permitted, restoring legal status, and pathways that may eventually lead to permanent residence.

IRCC has specific provisions for certain categories of workers, including international graduates, students, participants in International Experience Canada programs, and some family members of foreign workers. Some foreign nationals may be eligible to work without a work permit under specific exemptions and are advised to check whether an exemption applies before beginning employment.
