Abbas Haruna, a Seaman who was reportedly detained for almost six years following orders from a senior Nigerian Navy officer, has finally been released.
During a popular Abuja-based radio program, Brekete Family, Haruna’s wife, Hussaina Iliya, previously alleged that her husband had been unjustly detained since 2018 by the military.
Iliya accused a senior military officer of being responsible for Haruna’s prolonged detention and torture.
Her claims gained widespread attention, leading to the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, calling for an investigation into the matter.

On Friday, Iliya and her husband appeared on Brekete Family, where they confirmed that Abbas had been released. According to Iliya, her husband has also been discharged from the military.
Speaking tearfully, she expressed her dedication to staying by his side: “I will be with him no matter the situation. They have discharged him. He was ejected from the barracks. I love my husband. I love him,” she said, recounting their ordeal.
