Nigeria Immigration Service Upgrades Passport Tracking to Reduce Delays

Nigeria Immigration Service Upgrades Passport Tracking to Reduce Delays

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has rolled out a major upgrade to its passport tracking system, introducing a new status designed to improve transparency and reduce complaints from passport applicants across the country.

The Service explained that the update followed observations that hundreds of completed Nigerian passports remained uncollected at various passport offices, causing frustration, repeated enquiries and overcrowding at collection centres.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, the NIS announced the introduction of a new tracking status tagged “Produced (Passport Produced, Ready for Collection)”.

According to the Service, the new feature clearly notifies applicants once their international passports have been successfully produced and are available for collection.

The NIS said the enhancement builds on existing tracking stages, offering clearer and real-time updates on passport applications. Applicants who opted for physical collection can now easily confirm when their passports are ready for pick-up, while those who selected courier delivery can also track passports that have been produced but not yet delivered.

The Service noted that the lack of a clear production status in the past contributed to delays in collection, congestion at passport offices and avoidable complaints from applicants uncertain about the status of their documents.

By introducing the “Produced” status, the NIS said it expects to decongest passport offices, improve user experience and encourage timely collection of passports.

Reaffirming its commitment to technology-driven service delivery, the NIS stated that the update aligns with global best practices in passport administration and citizen-focused services.

Applicants were advised to regularly monitor their application status via the official NIS passport tracking portal at https://track.immigration.gov.ng.
