Nigerian leaders have failed to exploit gains of June 12, says Babangida
A former military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida, has accused political leaders of not utilising the gains of democracy.
The retired general spoke on Sunday ahead of Democracy Day — which is marked annually on June 12.
Babangida annulled the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by MKO Abiola and adjudged as the freest and fairest poll in the country.
In 2021, the former head of state said he took the decision to annul the election in the interest of Nigeria.
Speaking through, Kassim Afegbua, his media aide, Babangida said although Nigeria’s democracy has recorded some growth, there are still many grounds to be covered.
He said, “The gains of June 12, 1993 presidential election have not been exploited by political leaders in succeeding elections in Nigeria.
“It was adjudged the freest and fairest election in Nigeria, yet politicians have blatantly ignored that beauty; the beauty of credible elections.

“Remember, it was an election Nigerians came out en mass to choose their leaders, irrespective of their cultural/traditional and religious affiliations.”
The former president said political violence and incessant litigations are part of the issues affecting democracy.
“There is thuggery in politics in Nigeria, too many litigations in Nigeria, too many issues that transparent elections ought to have addressed,” he said.
Babangida decried increasing voter apathy, attributing it to the trust deficit between the people and their leaders.
“June 12 should naturally encourage more voters to endorse democracy and election, but the turnout during our election is gradually declining.
“Right now there is voter apathy, that’s the more reason why something must be done to ensure mass participation in elections,” he added
IBB, however, said Nigeria can get it right if leaders invest their time and resources in deepening democratic ideals.
“Nigeria’s democracy is getting more and more older. Democracy has come to stay but despite the imperfections, we can still get our act together to correct some of the issues and continue on that trajectory.
“It is a learning curve and a work in progress. Our leaders must continue to invest their time, energy, and resources to deepen democracy and sustain democratic ideals,” he said.

Woman, 30, remanded over alleged robbery of police officer in Makurdi
A magistrate court in Makurdi, the Benue capital, has remanded a 30-year-old woman identified as Comfort Yughemba for gross misconduct on Tuesday.
The suspect was charged for allegedly resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, robbery, raising a false alarm, and inciting breach of public peace.
Christy Ikpe, the presiding magistrate, who did not take the suspects’ plea for want of jurisdiction, adjourned the case till June 19 for further mention.
Inedu Friday, the police prosecutor, said the case was reported by Akor Success, an officer at ‘B’ Division Police Station, High Level, Makurdi, on May 5.
Friday said Tyokaan Maureen, from Apir junction, federal medical centre, Makurdi, lodged a complaint against Yughemba, who lived behind Towering tots primary school.

Upon arrival, she resisted arrest and forcefully stole a N150,000 cell phone from the officer.
The prosecutor added that Yughemba raised a false alarm, accusing the officer of being a kidnapper, and called on people to apprehend him. She then fled with the phone to an unknown destination.
During police investigation, she was arrested in connection with the alleged offences, which contravene Sections 171, 170, 95, and 146 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor prayed for another date for mention, as investigation is still ongoing.
The court’s decision marks a significant step in addressing the alleged crimes and promoting public safety.

The Islamic police force, Hisbah, in Kano State announced the arrest of 20 residents, both men and women, for bathing together.
The Kano Hisbah Board explained that officers from Operation Kau Da Badala conducted the arrests at a leisure center on Ring Road in Kano, the state capital, following complaints from the community.

As reported by the Daily Trust, Dr. Mujahidin Aminuddin Abubakar, the Deputy Commandant General of the board, noted that this behavior breached Hisbah law, which prohibits men and women from bathing together.
Expressing concern over the act, which according to him, could have been replaced with a more beneficial activity that would fetch them rewards from the Almighty, Abubakar said that upon completion of investigation, the arrested persons would be punished accordingly.

A pastor of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) and two others were killed by terrorists in Majure village, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Nation gathered that over 50 terrorists invaded the community on motorcycles, causing panic by firing shots and triggering a stampede.
The terrorists also abducted 20 people, mostly women and children, and transported them to an unknown destination in a Sharon bus.
The victims were said to have been killed when they were working on their farms which were close to the church.
