A woman of Nigerian lineage, Chidinma Thompson, has been appointed as the first black Justice of The Kings Court Of the Bench In Canada.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on Saturday confirmed  Chidinma’s appointment.

The post said Chidinma became the first black judge on Friday.

The post reads: “Yesterday, February 16, 2024, in Calgary, Canada, Nigeria made history again. Our own Dr. Mrs. Chidinma Thompson (@CbThompsonyyc ), a Nigerian-born Canadian, became the first black Honorable Justice of the Kings Court of the Bench Canada.”

Last October, there was news about how Chidinma was sworn in as a Judge by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani.

Thompson, a partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Calgary, was appointed a Justice of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in Calgary to replace Justice C.M. Jones (Calgary), who was elected to become a supernumerary judge effective November 11, 2022.

Nigerian Army begins recruitment; See requirements, how to apply

Nigerian Army has opened its portal for 87 Regular Recruits Intake for Non-Tradesmen and women.

Method of Application

Interested candidates are advised to click on https://recruitment.army.mil.ng to complete the free online application form, submit it online, and print a copy. Then, print and complete the Guarantor Form as appropriate.

The exercise commences on May 3, 2024, and ends June 7, 2024.

Basic requirements and qualification

(1) Applicants must be single and Nigerian citizens by birth and must possess National Identity Card/NIN slip.

(2) Applicants must be medically, physically and psychologically fit in accordance with Nigerian Army Standards.

(3) Applicants must be free of any criminal conviction by the court of law.

(4) Applicants must possess a valid birth certificate/age declaration endorsed by the National Population Commission, Hospital or Local Government Council.

(5) Applicants must possess a valid certificate of state of origin.

(6) Applicants must not be less than 1.68 meters and 1.65 meters tall for male and female candidates, respectively.

(7) An applicant must not be less than 18 years or more than 22 years for non-trades men/women, while tradesmen/women must not be more than 26 years as at 30 June 24.

(8) All applicants must possess at least a minimum of 4 passes in not more than two sittings in WASSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB.

(9) In addition to the above qualification, those applying as tradesmen/women must also possess a Trade Test/City Guild Certificate. Details are available on the website.

Traveller from Egypt nabbed at Kano Int’l airport with hard drugs

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, on Monday in Kano/Jigawa Area Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, intercepted a passenger at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, making a seizure of hard drugs.

A statement from the Public Relations Officer, Saidu Nuruddeen, said that the successful operation was a testament to the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and the commitment of the personnel to combating smuggling and ensuring national security.

A passenger arriving from Cairo through Ethiopian Airlines flight ET941 was intercepted during a joint security check. The examination of the passenger’s luggage revealed 241 empty packages of OTRAVIN and 80 pieces of OTRAVIN nasal drops.

He said that the National Agency for Food and Drugs Commission, NAFDAC, who is a key partner in the joint security check, has expressed interest in the seized items, particularly the nasal drops. In accordance with due process, the items have been detained, and a smooth transfer to NAFDAC is being facilitated.

Nuruddeen claimed that the Area Controller, Compt Dauda Ibrahim Chana, has commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir    Adeniyi, and his management team for their support in the operation.

He equally appreciated the dedication and professionalism of the personnel of the Service and those of NDLEA, NAFDAC, and NQS who worked together to achieve this remarkable outcome.

Court stops NERC from implementing new electricity tariff

A federal high court in Kano has granted an interim order restraining the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) from implementing a hike in electricity tariff for Band A customers in the state.

The court directed Kano Electricity Distribution Plc to discontinue the implementation of tariff increased from N76.54/Kwh to N225/Kwh.

Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, who granted the order also directed NERC and KEDCO to stop taking any step, pending hearing and determination of a motion on notice filed by the applicants.

NERC and KEDCO were also restrained from intimidating or threatening to disconnect the applicants from electricity supply for non-acceptance of the April 2024 supplementary order pending hearing in the substantive suit.

The court granted the order after hearing counsel for the applicants, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmud and Yahaya Isa Abdulkareem, moved the motion experte supported by an affidavit sworn to by one Engineer Aliyu Jibrin Abdullahi.

The applicants in the matter are Supper Sack Limited, BBY Sack Limited, Mama Sannu Industries Limited, Dala Food Nigeria Limited, Tofa Textile and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Co limited by guarantee.

The court ordered that the
Interim injunction be published in national dailies and fixed May 16 for hearing on the motion on notice.
