Nnamdi Kanu Orders Permanent End to Monday Sit-at-Home in South-East

Nnamdi Kanu Orders Permanent End to Monday Sit-at-Home in South-East

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the permanent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East, following a direct order from its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The decision, which takes effect from Monday, February 9, 2026, was disclosed on Sunday in a statement signed by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful.

According to the group, the directive was issued personally by Nnamdi Kanu, putting an end to a protest that has been in place since August 2021, when IPOB introduced the sit-at-home to protest Kanu’s rendition to Nigeria and continued detention. The weekly action had led to the closure of markets, schools, banks, offices and transport services across the region.

Powerful said the new order removes any justification for residents to remain indoors on Mondays, stressing that economic and social activities must resume fully.

“The IPOB, under the supreme leadership of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, hereby announces to the entire world that the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East is officially and permanently cancelled with effect from tomorrow, Monday, February 9, 2026,” the statement read.

It added that Kanu took the decision to ensure that children return to school and that residents can conduct lawful businesses without fear or intimidation.

“There is now no need, excuse or justification for anyone to stay at home on Mondays. All markets, schools, offices, transport services and economic activities must resume fully and normally from tomorrow,” IPOB stated.

The group warned that anyone attempting to enforce sit-at-home after the cancellation would be acting against Kanu’s direct instructions and against the Biafran cause.

“Any individual or group attempting to enforce sit-at-home from this moment forward is acting against his command. Such persons are enemies of our people and will be confronted,” the statement said.

IPOB also alleged that some individuals were exploiting the sit-at-home order to instill fear, intimidate residents and carry out attacks, insisting that such actions would no longer be tolerated.

At the same time, the group cautioned state governors, including Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, against threatening or demolishing the businesses of traders who may choose, out of personal conviction, to stay away from work.

IPOB stressed that any market renovation or reconstruction requiring temporary relocation must involve the consent of traders and the provision of adequate alternative trading spaces.

Calling for unity and calm, the group urged residents of the South-East to ignore fear-mongering and return to their normal routines.

“We therefore call on all our people across the South-East to come out, open their shops, go to work and send their children to school without fear. The era of Monday sit-at-home is over,” the statement concluded.
