Northern Yoruba youths call for total boycott of planned protests

Yoruba youths in the northern part of the country have called for a total boycott of the nationwide protests being planned by some individuals in the country.

This call was made during a meeting held in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, on Monday, where the youths discussed the current state of the nation.

In a communique issued by Seyi Olorunsola, the co-chair of the Northern Yoruba Youths’ Forum, the meeting focused on various issues affecting the youth and the Yoruba ethnic group, particularly those living in the northern region.

According to the communique, the forum after a robust deliberations, adopted several resolutions which cut across calling on government to address the present economic challenges in the country as well as the need for youths to shun the planned nationwide strike.

” The group acknowledges the current economic challenges in Nigeria and their severe impact on ordinary Nigerians, especially the youth.

” We call on the government to take all necessary measures within its power to alleviate the suffering of the people.

” The meeting recognized the various programmes and initiatives of the Tinubu administration aimed at stabilizing the economy after years of decline under previous administrations. These initiatives include but are not limited to: Massive palliative programs across different societal strata.

“The recent increase in the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000. The distribution of 650 metric tonnes of grains from the strategic grains reserve.
The allocation of 20 trucks of 25kg bags of rice to each state.

” Advocating for Cordial Youth-Government Engagement:
We call on youths to engage with authorities through more constructive means to address their concerns. Protests could potentially disrupt the already fragile economy and have the likelihood of turning violent.”

The forum also resolved that no Yoruba youth, whether in Nigeria or abroad, particularly those in the South Western parts of the country, especially in Lagos—the capital of the Yoruba homeland—should participate in the planned protests.

” By this resolution, the Group and Yoruba youths, in general, express their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies and programs, ensuring that these initiatives have ample time to achieve their intended outcomes,” the communique read.

Banditry outcome of people neglected for centuries — Gumi

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed allegations that politicians are behind the rising insecurity in northern Nigeria.

In recent months, the North-West region has faced increasing banditry and violence, leading to the deaths of many, including the monarch of Gobir in Sokoto State. The unrest has sparked claims that politicians may be funding the violence for their own gain.

In 2021, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, alleged that some politicians were sponsoring the banditry seen across the country. However, in an interview with Punch, Sheikh Gumi denied these claims, stating that there is no evidence to suggest that politicians are fueling the unrest in the North.

He said;

“This is an unintelligent allegation. No politician is sponsoring these people. We are all victims. The opposition is not even behind this. This is a natural reaction of people neglected for centuries without education.

“Now they are exposed to the world and they want education. These people are exposed to the Internet and they see how much they are deprived. They want to fight back. This act is not by anybody.”
