Osimhen, Boniface on four-man Arsenal strikers shortlist

Osimhen, Boniface on four-man Arsenal strikers shortlist
Arsenal have apparently drawn up a four-man shortlist of striking options for the summer transfer window, with Super Eagles duo Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface among them.
During a dismal spell of winter form, in which they won just one of seven games from December 9 to January 7 with just five goals to boast, Gooners were crying out for a new striker to arrive midway through the season.
However, with the threat of Financial Fair Play sanctions hovering over their heads, Arsenal – who spent over £200m on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber in the summer transfer window – did not answer their supporters’ calls.
Mikel Arteta and Edu’s decision to stick with the options at their disposal has been vindicated, as the Gunners have run riot since returning from a mid-season Dubai training camp, winning each of their first six Premier League games in 2024.

The Gunners have struck a staggering 25 top-flight goals in that time – including 15 in their last three matches with Newcastle United, Burnley and West Ham United – but their shortcomings did come to the fore in a 1-0 loss to Porto in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League contest.
Leading number nine Gabriel Jesus has struggled with knee injuries during his time at the Emirates Stadium, while Eddie Nketiah is still playing second fiddle to the Brazilian and is not a long-term solution up front.
Having also allowed Folarin Balogun to depart for Monaco over the summer, Arsenal are expected to prioritise the capture of a new marksman this summer, and according to TEAMtalk, four names are under consideration.
The first of those is Napoli talisman and 2022-23 Serie A top scorer Victor Osimhen, who netted 26 times en route to Scudetto glory last season but is confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of the campaign.
The Gunners are said to be behind Chelsea in the race to sign the Nigeria international, though, while Paris Saint-Germain are also in the running and are better placed to pay Osimhen’s mammoth £113m release clause.

Mbappe’s legal team escalates PSG salary dispute, demands €55m in unpaid wages

Mbappe’s legal team escalates PSG salary dispute, demands €55m in unpaid wages
France football captain Kylian Mbappe’s legal team has taken fresh legal action against his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), over an ongoing salary dispute, demanding €55 million in unpaid wages.
The team has also appealed to the French sports minister and UEFA to intervene, as tensions over the issue continue to mount.
“We’re going to go on the attack,” Mbappe’s lawyer, Delphine Verheyden, declared during a press conference on Thursday.
Although the French League had previously ordered PSG to pay the outstanding amount, the French football federation dismissed Mbappe’s request, citing an active case in a civil court.
In response, Mbappe’s legal representatives approached a Paris court and obtained an order to freeze €55 million from PSG’s accounts.
“We have protectively seized the accounts of PSG, to the tune of 55 million euros, this morning,” explained Thomas Clay, one of the legal experts representing Mbappe.

PSG has yet to respond to the latest development. However, in October, the club indicated that it might be “forced to bring the case before the competent courts” while still pursuing an “amicable solution” with the player.
Back in January 2023, Mbappe stated that he had reached an agreement with PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi to “protect all parties and preserve the club’s serenity for the challenges ahead.”
Mbappe, who became PSG’s all-time top scorer during his seven-year stint with the club, left as a free agent last year to join Real Madrid. PSG previously claimed that the forward rejected an offer from the LFP to mediate the dispute.
Adding to the legal pressure, another member of the France captain legal team, Pierre-Olivier Sur, revealed that a harassment complaint has been filed, alleging that PSG applied pressure on the player to renew his contract in 2023—just one year before it was due to expire.
PSG, for its part, maintains that Mbappe’s contract was “legally amended” and that he failed to honor certain commitments after deciding to leave for Madrid.
UEFA, while distancing itself from direct involvement, stated its position via a spokesperson: “The case is only indirectly linked with us in terms of possible arrears of payment. If a final decision is taken by the French authorities and confirms that there are indeed arrears … the club would then have to pay the arrears on time or risk non-compliance with financial fair play.”

Lewandowski shines as Barcelona crush Dortmund in Champions League showdown

Lewandowski shines as Barcelona crush Dortmund in Champions League showdown
Robert Lewandowski delivered a vintage performance against his former club, scoring twice to help Barcelona demolish Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
The dominant display extended Barcelona’s unbeaten run across all competitions to 23 matches (W19, D4), and further strengthened their pursuit of a historic treble.
Barcelona started on the front foot, with early chances falling to Lamine Yamal and Lewandowski.
The breakthrough came when Raphinha, this season’s leading Champions League scorer, tapped in at the far post — a close call for offside, but the goal stood.
Dortmund responded with efforts from Carney Chukwuemeka and Serhou Guirassy, but couldn’t break through. After the break, Jamie Gittens went close, but Barcelona quickly wrestled back control.

Lewandowski, who has now scored 28 goals in 28 matches against Dortmund, made it 2-0 after heading in from close range following a deflected cross by Raphinha.
The third came after a swift counterattack — a slick move involving Yamal and Fermin López ended with the Polish striker smashing in a first-time finish.
There was still time for more brilliance, as Yamal rounded off the scoring with a clinical strike after a fine assist from Raphinha, sealing a night to forget for Dortmund.
Lewandowski’s brace not only sealed the win but also earned him a place in history — he’s now the first player to score 10 Champions League goals in a single season for three different clubs: Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.
Dortmund, winless in six meetings with Barcelona (D2, L4), now face an almost impossible task in the second leg.

Mo Salah poised to pen new Liverpool deal

Mo Salah poised to pen new Liverpool deal
Liverpool are moving closer to agreeing a new contract with forward Mohamed Salah.
Talks between all parties are ongoing and a final agreement is yet to be reached, but sources have indicated the club have made positive progress in their efforts and are hopeful a deal will be done.
Salah’s deal expires at the end of the season and there has been some uncertainty over his future, with clubs in Saudi Arabia keen to land the Egypt international.
But the recent progress has raised hope at Anfield that Salah will extend his stay at the Premier League club.

Salah has been a key player for Liverpool since his arrival in the summer of 2017 and has been central to the team’s title charge this season, scoring 32 goals across all competitions.
Earlier this week, captain Virgil van Dijk – whose deal also expires in the summer – provided a positive update on his own contract talks.
“There is progress, yes,” said the defender.
“These are internal discussions and we’ll see. I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again [at Fulham].”
There is less certainty about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future, however, with the right-back in talks with Real Madrid over a free transfer move to Spain before next season.
