PDP Crisis Deepens as Makinde, Wike Clash Over Party Control

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing escalating internal tensions as governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Nyesom Wike of Rivers State engage in a bitter battle for control of the party’s leadership and direction. The feud, which has intensified over recent weeks, threatens to further fragment the party ahead of upcoming national elections.

The conflict reportedly stems from disagreements over the selection of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs. Both factions — the Makinde-led group and the Wike-aligned camp — have accused each other of manipulating party structures, intimidating delegates, and undermining democratic processes.

According to insiders, the Makinde faction has scheduled its own internal meetings and claimed legitimacy over upcoming conventions, while Wike’s camp continues to assert its authority, citing party rules and previous agreements. The divide has spilled into public view, with heated exchanges on social media, press statements, and legal threats, signaling a “dirty fight” for dominance.

Political analysts warn that the internal PDP crisis could have serious implications for the party’s electoral prospects, including weakened grassroots mobilization, defection of members, and reduced national cohesion. Observers say the feud also presents an opportunity for opposition parties to exploit PDP’s divisions in key states.

Party elders have called for immediate dialogue and reconciliation, emphasizing the need for unity and adherence to party laws to prevent further erosion of PDP’s credibility. Meanwhile, stakeholders await clarity on the convention dates and legitimate leadership structures as the rift continues to grow.
