Police arrest father in Enugu for allegedly defiling 2 daughters

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a man, Ozioma Okonkwo, for allegedly defiling his two-year-old and five-year-old daughters in a case that has sparked outrage across the state.

Okonkwo, who hails from Imo State but resides in Enugu, was apprehended late Saturday, October 25, following a tip-off from a concerned citizen who alerted authorities.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The ministry disclosed that the two minors have been relocated to a government-approved shelter where they are receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support. Their mother, said to be deeply traumatized by the incident, is also under the care of social welfare officers for therapy and counseling.

“The Enugu State Government commends the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and professional response, which led to the prompt arrest of the suspect,” the statement read.

It reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence, assuring that all offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Commenting on the case, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development described the incident as “heart-wrenching and an unacceptable crime against innocence,” vowing that justice will be served.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for stronger enforcement of child protection laws and stiffer penalties for perpetrators of sexual violence.
