Salah Returns With Record-Breaking Assist as Liverpool Beat Brighton

Mohamed Salah marked his much-anticipated return to Liverpool action with a decisive assist as the Reds defeated Brighton 2-0 at Anfield, powered by a Hugo Ekitike double.

The victory lifted Liverpool to sixth place in the Premier League standings and extended their unbeaten run to five matches, sealing their first home win since November 4.

Attention was firmly on Salah, who returned to the matchday squad after being dropped for Liverpool’s midweek Champions League win against Inter Milan, following his explosive post-match comments after the draw at Leeds United. Named on the bench by manager Arne Slot, the Egyptian star entered the game in the 26th minute after Joe Gomez was forced off injured, with Dominik Szoboszlai shifting to right-back.

Liverpool made a lightning start, opening the scoring after just 46 seconds — the fastest Premier League goal of the season. A header from Gomez found Ekitike, who controlled and volleyed past Bart Verbruggen to put the hosts ahead.

Brighton missed several opportunities to equalise, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker denying Diego Gomez when clean through, before the midfielder later squandered an open goal.

The visitors were punished for their wastefulness on the hour mark when Salah’s corner picked out an unmarked Ekitike, who headed home his second goal. It was the French forward’s 10th goal of the season and his second consecutive league double.

The assist saw Salah reach 277 goal involvements in 302 Premier League appearances for Liverpool — the most by any player for a single club, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record at Manchester United.

Salah was heavily involved throughout and went close to scoring late on, only to blaze wide after being set up by Federico Chiesa. He later applauded all four sides of Anfield, as uncertainty continues to surround his future at the club.

The Egyptian winger is set to depart for Africa Cup of Nations duty with Egypt, where he could miss up to eight matches if his country reach the final in Morocco.

Despite off-field distractions and speculation over Salah’s future, Liverpool recorded back-to-back wins and clean sheets, while Brighton slipped to ninth in the table.

Adesanya Vows to Fight On Despite Fourth Straight Defeat

Nigerian-born mixed martial artist Israel Adesanya has reaffirmed his determination to continue competing at the highest level, insisting that recent setbacks will not define his legacy.

Adesanya suffered another defeat in the octagon on Saturday night, losing to American contender Joe Pyfer via second-round technical knockout at a UFC Fight Night event in Seattle.

The contest began on a promising note for the former middleweight champion, who displayed his signature precision and movement in the opening round. Adesanya controlled the distance effectively and dictated the pace of exchanges, raising hopes of a return to winning form.

However, the tide turned in the second round as Pyfer absorbed the early pressure and began to assert his physical advantage. The American closed the distance with powerful strikes before securing a crucial takedown. From a dominant position on the ground, he mounted Adesanya and unleashed a series of heavy blows, forcing referee Herb Dean to stop the fight.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Pyfer, while extending a challenging run for Adesanya, who has now suffered four consecutive losses. His recent defeats include bouts against Sean Strickland, Dricus du Plessis, and Nassourdine Imavov.

Despite growing concerns about his future in the middleweight division, the 36-year-old remained defiant in his post-fight comments, emphasizing his unwavering fighting spirit.

“I’ll keep coming back again and again. I’m not leaving this sport. You can’t stop me,” Adesanya declared, adding that defeat would not diminish his enduring belief in himself.

While questions continue to mount over his next steps, Adesanya’s resolve suggests he is far from ready to step away from the sport that has defined his career.

Super Eagles Edge Iran 2–1 in Antalya Friendly

Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, began their March international break on a winning note with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Iran in an international friendly at the Antalya Stadium in Turkey on Friday, March 27.

The three-time African champions made a bright start, asserting their dominance early in the encounter. Winger Moses Simon opened the scoring in the sixth minute after latching onto a swift counterattack, evading his marker before slotting a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

Nigeria continued to press forward, creating several chances and maintaining control for much of the first half, though they were unable to extend their lead before the break.

The Super Eagles doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. In the 51st minute, Ademola Lookman provided a precise through pass to Akor Adams, who calmly finished to make it 2–0.

Head coach Eric Chelle utilized the friendly to test new options, handing debuts to Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu, who came on for Semi Ajayi and Igoh Ogbu respectively. Later substitutions saw Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru introduced in place of Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and Akor Adams, while Frank Onyeka also featured late on.

Iran reduced the deficit in the closing stages, setting up a nervy finish, but Nigeria held firm to secure the victory.

The match marked Nigeria’s first outing since finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and comes after the disappointment of missing out on World Cup qualification following a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo.

Friday’s encounter was only the third meeting between both nations. Nigeria previously defeated Iran in a 1998 friendly, while their group-stage clash at the 2014 FIFA World Cup ended in a goalless draw.

The Super Eagles will now shift focus to their next friendly fixture against Jordan on Tuesday, also scheduled to take place in Turkey.

Mohamed Salah Confirms Liverpool Exit After Nine Years at Anfield

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool F.C. at the end of the 2025–26 season, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield that has seen him become one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

The 33-year-old Egypt international announced his decision in an emotional video shared on his social media accounts, where he expressed gratitude to the club, teammates, and supporters who have played a major role in his career since joining from AS Roma in June 2017.

“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season,” Salah said.

Liverpool confirmed that an agreement has been reached regarding his departure, allowing the forward to leave on a free transfer despite signing a contract extension in April 2025. The club noted that Salah wished to make his decision public early out of respect for supporters and to provide clarity on his future.

Salah’s departure marks the end of a transformative era at Anfield, where he has been instrumental in Liverpool’s domestic and European success. During his time at the club, he has won multiple major honours, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

Individually, Salah has recorded an outstanding goal tally, scoring 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him among the top three all-time scorers in Liverpool’s history, behind club legends Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. He has also won the Premier League Golden Boot multiple times and earned several individual accolades, including the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award on three occasions.

This season, however, has been relatively challenging for the forward by his high standards. He has scored 10 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions, a return that falls below his usual prolific output at Anfield. Reports also indicate tensions earlier in the campaign following comments attributed to Salah suggesting frustration with his situation at the club.

Despite speculation during the January transfer window about a possible mid-season exit, Salah remained with the squad following his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, continuing to feature under head coach Arne Slot.

In his farewell remarks, Salah reflected on his journey at Liverpool, describing the club as more than just a football team and expressing deep emotional attachment to the city and its supporters.

“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion. It’s a history. It’s a spirit,” he said, adding that his time at the club had been shaped by both triumphs and difficult moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic and personal losses within the team.

Liverpool acknowledged Salah’s contribution, describing his tenure as a “remarkable nine-year chapter” and indicating that a formal tribute will be organised later in the season once competitive commitments conclude.

The club remains in contention across multiple competitions, with several matches still to play in the Premier League, as well as upcoming fixtures in domestic and European tournaments. Teammates, including vice-captain Andrew Robertson, have publicly praised Salah’s impact and legacy, describing him as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.

Salah’s next destination remains unknown, with no official confirmation of which club or league he will join after leaving Liverpool. His departure is expected to trigger widespread transfer speculation as one of football’s most recognisable and successful forwards prepares for the next chapter of his career.
