Sunday Igboho Raises Alarm as Gunmen Kill Three Farmers in Oyo Community

Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has raised the alarm over rising insecurity in Oyo State following the killing of three farmers by gunmen in Igboho, his hometown in Orelope Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan, Igboho called on President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government to urgently address the escalating attacks in rural communities across the South-West, warning that continued inaction could lead to further bloodshed and breakdown of law and order.

The victims were identified as Aderoju Mukaila, Olawuwo Saka, and Ojeniyi Ojebayo.

According to the statement, the farmers were attacked by armed men, rushed to a hospital for treatment, but later succumbed to their injuries despite efforts by medical personnel to save their lives.

Igboho lamented what he described as the government’s failure to act decisively despite repeated warnings about worsening insecurity in the area.

“On Sunday, three innocent people were killed in my town, Igboho. This is exactly what I have been warning the government about for years. Nothing has changed, and our people continue to suffer attacks while those responsible roam freely,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, particularly in the Oke-Ogun axis, noting that insecurity has become a daily reality for residents of Igboho and neighbouring villages.

Igboho further expressed concern over the activities of gunmen, bandits, and hoodlums operating within forests and rural settlements in the South-West, as well as parts of Kwara and Kogi states.

He said the latest incident highlighted the need for the Tinubu administration to deploy effective security measures to curb what he described as the deadly activities of criminal elements terrorising the region.

“The victims and their families are now in deep despair. Their patience has reached its elastic limit. The Federal Government and relevant security agencies must take decisive action before residents are forced to resort to self-help,” he warned.

Igboho also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for attacks on farmers and rural dwellers, urging security agencies to rely on actionable intelligence to prevent further violence.

NAPO’s counsel said the union leader and his colleagues were picked up during a security operation in Finima, Bonny Local Government Area, but have since been held incommunicado, with no official confirmation from the DSS on their detention or location. The development has sparked growing concern among family members, labour unions and civil society groups.

The lawyer described the action as unlawful and a violation of the detainees’ fundamental human rights, noting that security agencies are required by law to disclose the whereabouts of arrested persons and grant them access to legal representation.

The arrests reportedly followed rising tensions linked to NAPO’s labour activities, including a recent warning strike by plant operators working on the NLNG Train 7 project in Bonny.
